So I got off work tonight and decided I was finally going to take the big plunge and try fake American food, only instead of McDonalds I figured I'd try the real Korean version of fake American food instead of the fake Korean version of fake American food. Plus it was closer and I couldn't justify taking a taxi to get a sandwich.

I stood outside the building for a few timid minutes before I went in. I kept thinking that it wasn't too late to change my mind and go for some Korean food, squid or something. But I made the resolution to try it and see what the Korean's called delicious... and then I woke up in hell.

For starters the french fries were like the frozen bag kind that you bake in the oven. Not bad... but not good. The cheese burger was terrible, edible and decent, but absolutely terrible. The cheese was, as best I can describe it, liquid Nacho cheese, and the burger itself looked sickly... not to mention that it was paper thin. The pepsi on the other hand was grade-A, and the whole meal, crappy ice cream cone included, cost me around 5000... never again, never again. I ate it, it was filling, it even "tasted" decent... but I couldn't think about a real hamburger while I was eating, I didn't want to ruin what small pleasures I was rewarding my pallete with, and those are the kindest words I can muster.

There was a squid burger on the menu too... wow, thats all I have to say.

The ice cream is great in the summer. I like the shrimp burger. It's not bad if other food is not available to you.

Lotte always struck me as a bit plasticky - kind of like eating textureless styrofoam.

I find the wait in Lotteria is wonderfully slow too. Like a good 5 mins for each order. Fair enough its fresh but is it tastey enough to wait? Gimme a toh-suh-tuh shop neday.

As long as you stay far far away from the "hamburgers", Lotteria food isn't all that bad.

We westerners have been spoiled by tasting really hamburgers. Most koreans haven't.

My apologist comment for the night.

I used to eat those rib sandwiches. They were good. You ever go to Hansot, the Korean fast food place? I love that place. I wish there was one near my apt.

You should've gone there nine years ago. Back then, they were trying harder to be western-style, and they had less of an idea. I think in the past nine years they've moved away from the campiness and tried to refine the food for a Korean palate.

I swear to christ, they used to dip the buns in oil; all the food came glistening in oil. It was like they saw a burger joint in a movie about the '50s and tried their best to reproduce it without knowing what it tastes like.

I'll take an overpriced Bennigan's burger anyday. I find Lotteria food awful as well, although the orange juice is pretty good (!). Even the TV commercials for Lotteria seem to parrot McDonald's.

I loved how when McD's brought out the 3,000 won lunchtime menu, Lotteria hit back hard with the 2,995 won lunchtime menu.

(ketchup 5 won)

Lotteria food has got to be the most gawd-awful stuff I've EVER put in my mouth, and I've put quite a few oddities in my mouth.
