Does anyone know a good CONVERSATION TOPIC text book for 12 year (korean) 5th grade elementary kids??
That's the type of text book that has a story/essay and questions (to be spoken by students) for each chapter.
I have two very bright students, with good english speaking skills, but they lack the maturity to discuss most question/topics found in conversation texts. They like to talk about "Harry Potter" and I'm struggling asking questions about jobs/pollution/ etc.
We are currently try to use the Talking Talking (for junior 1 & 2) and Small Gorup Discussion Topics for Korean High School Students and Beginners (Teenagers and young Adults).
Thanks - appreciate any help. |

if you're somewhat flexible, I'd go with the Harry potter thing. Have them read a chapter, and then discuss that chapter in class.
"what do you think Professor Snape will do to Harry?"
" what would you do with an invisibility cloak?" |

Good tip but their harry potter book is in hangul. I can't read it.
Also, mummy and daddy are professors and they want their little darlings to be able to discuss a variety of topics with me. I'm struggling. |

I'd suggest you give up on finding one perfect book & customize their lessons from a variety of sources. |

How about Ananova.com - you look up their weird and quirky news stories - some with pix. Chatty kids are fascinated by some of those stories. Of course you'll have to make up some questions/activities to supplement. But it's worked for me.
Also, I like Ken Methold's REading Plus book by Compass Publishing. It's a small book, but has some practical school topics in a reading comp with questions.
You can also try the True Stories series. |

Thanks for the tips,
Keep them coming. I need all the help I can get.
Basically, these kids have above average intelligence and spoken english skills. (and VERY pushy, educated parents). |
