| My nvida g-force 5600fx is getting a bit dated and its time to move up. As such I'm looking fro reconmendations fromt the technophants out there. What is the best? Who is better now nvidea or ati? Should I get a new colling system too (I'm on the edge now)? |

nVidia is the king of the hill at the moment.
Dual-linked 7800s are what every Greek shipping magnate's offspring are using. Those with mortal bank accounts will have to settle for less...
ATi just released their x1000 series and I haven't seen a comparison between them and 7800 yet but that's bound to appear at any time...
Unless you need to be bleeding edge I don't think it much matters whether you go nvidia or ATi so much as whether you go from AGP to PCIexpress or not....

It depends.
Are you using AGP or PCI Express?
I'm assuming AGP if you're just upgrading the graphics card, and keeping the same mobo. If so:
Probably a 6600GT would be good if you want to stick with nVidia, and retails for as low as 159,000 won. Last generation, but not bad at all.
For ATi, probably the old 9800 Pro for around 180,000. This one is the genration before last, but it is still pretty damn good.
Almost all the new stuff is coming out in PCI-Express only now.

It might be better go with a 6800 and then double it up with PCI-E later on down the road. Though, I would personally go with a 7800 and forego the upgrade later. A 7800 will also fit into a dual configuaration nicer with another 7800 if you choose to go this route (why put it together with a 6800 and cause your system bottlenecks?).
BTW, I am writing this under the assumption that one in their right mind would eventually move up to a 7800 anyways. Why not start out with one in a single configuration and add another (once they get cheaper), further down the line? |

Allow me to re-phrase: Average hardcore gamer of NON-first person shooters. I'm talking Age of Empires III, Civ IV, advent rising- things of that nature which do not require the super-tasticness of a FPS.
Note, I had originally planned on getting the 7800...but I'm an AGP... so can't. Currently, I'm looking at picking up a 6600 this weekend as its the most powerful AGP that I know of. |

I've had no problems whatsover playing all the latest games (up to and including Doom3, HL2, and a F.E.A.R. demo) on an ATi 9500Pro. That's getting a little long in the tooth (I expect I should be upgrading my card but instead will hold off a little longer and go PCIe which will entail a new system board, which will entail new RAM, etc.), but I think it means you don't neccessarily have to buy the most expensive card out there to have a decent enough playing experience.
Civ4:
"The Minimum System Requirements for the game are: 1 GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and a 32MB video card with hardware transform and lighting capabilities. The recommended Specifications are: 512MB of ram, Pentium4 processor, and a recent graphics card (like the Radeon 9800)."
AOE3:
"The game's minimum system requirements are: 1.4GHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 64 MB video card that supports hardware transform and lighting, Windows XP, 56k modem for online play and 2GB hard drive space. For more information, please visit http://www.ageofempires3.com." |

I'm very happy with my Albatron 6600GT. GTA San Andreas and Doom 3 both play well on or near the highest settings.
My only concern is that I know I will succumb and want a PCI-E system soon enough rendering my AGP 6600GT useless. Or is it? Did I read something about newer Nvidia cards having some kind of adaptor function which allows AGP or PCI-e? |

| From what I read, its a bridge thing availabe on the gfx cards made during the transitional point: the 6600gts and the 6800gts. Not sure though. |

| Don't even bother with an adaptor. AGP simply doesn't have the necessary bandwidth that PCI-e requires. |

Or if you work it right, you can try getting a girlfriend (in my case, boyfriend) and shower her with 500,000 won of gifts. If you spread the gifts out over a long period of time, you could be having sex for several months.
Far more enjoyable than gaming, and it means you can leave the house!

There's an ASRock motherboard that has both PCI-E and AGP graphics slots, so that could be one way to go. Keep your video card until it's time to upgrade, then switch over to PCI-e. |

It turns out that I'm going to have to upgrade much sooner than planned (the 9500pro VPU is constantly locking up on GTA-SA, even though it handled the FEAR demo well...  ) so I can't go the PCIe route- it looks like I'm going to pick up a BFG 6200 oc- I don't want to spend on a 6600 or 6800 since I know I'm probably going to switch to a PCIe based board in a year's time or less. Not happy with the ATI-based AGP options in my price range so this will be my first nVidea-based card.
BFG GeForce 6200 oc (oc as in over-clocked, but just a little- the core runs at 375Mhz instead of 350Mhz)
AGP 8x
256MB DDR (or maybe DDR2, I don't have the stats in front of me)
RAMDACS dual 400Mhz (whatever the hell that means)
DVI/VGB/HDTV/S-video out, dual monitor.
$169 CDN with a $30 mail-in rebate. |

A standard 6600 with 256MB will cost you about 120,000 won or less.
I've seen some as low as 112,000 won with 128MB.
How's the 6200 OC operating stats vs the 6600?
