So...its been a month and I haven't touched western food save for a few crappy pizzas my employers saw fit to order for us during our breaks. They weren't that bad, but sweet potato and corn have no place on a pizza, and thats all there is to say on that.
Then yesterday I was watching a commercial for McDonalds, 3000won for a burger, fries, and a coke (btw Korean coke tastes like crap unless its in a can, and even then...) Or anyway, I think it was 3000won, moot point.
Then the thought of making love to a piece of beef hit me, and tomorrow or the next day (no later than Friday will I be able to resist my wet dreams of red meat) I'll be sleezing into a McDonalds.
Funny enough because I never liked it back at home, just wondering how extra crappy the Korean version of a double quarter pounder with cheese is? Theres a Korean based burger joint by my work named something like "Lotteria", or so I think... wondering if I'd have better odds in there.
Are the McD's french fries the same? Thats really the best thing. |

| Well, there are no Korean double quarter pounders or quarter pounders. The McTwist is pretty good if made right, one of the best burgers I've had. As for Lotteria, it depends if they're made well too. A rib burger is pretty good if done right. |

A rib burger? Heh, no. I had a bad experience with one of those in the 5th grade. Never again my friend, never again.
And no quarter pounders??!? What the *beep*... not a day goes by where I don't figure out a way to make a million dollars in this country. One word: Slurpees. |

| You just said you didn't like McDonald's, so why the hell do you care if there are no quarter-pounders? Or is it that you're just trying to complain about everything you see here in Korea? The potato pizza isn't that bad at all... think outside the box a little bit and maybe you'll expand your tastes a little bit. As for the McTwist... isn't it supposed to be the McFeast... at least that was what I was told, and it makes some degree of sense I suppose. I do agree about the cola not being good in plastic bottles, and I feel the same way about the beer in the large plastic pitchers that are sold these days. |

Really???? After you're done clicking your red heels begging to go back home, please give me the GPS coordinates of the place in the western world where fountain syrup Coke actually tastes better than canned Coke and I'll buy a Winnebago and live outside of that place for the rest of my years. |

Whoa dude... who took a turn to negative town? Me or you?
I don't like McDonalds, and never have... but the quarter pounder is their definitive sandwich. Its like sex with mayonaisse. And I don't complain about anything I see in Korea, I'm digging it all...
Expand my tastes? I've eaten just about every kind of animal that there is to eat on this planet, save for whale, dog, cat, monkey brains, and... raw fish (big fan of raw ocotpus though). All are on my todo list, except maybe cat, thats just wrong no matter which way you slice it. Didn't you see the part about not touching Western food for a month?
Oh... and sweet potato pizza sucks. It is definately that bad. I'll eat it, and it tastes good enough to put on a smile and say thank you, but there is something unholy with that as a topping... the god my pizza-inventing people will smote you for disagreeing, these koreans simply know not what they do. |

Oh wait.. I do complain about Korean imitation western food.. but in the States I complained about American imitation asian food (General Tso's chicken anyone?)
Thats what you do when you have an appreciation for authentic food. You can't stand crappy knock offs. Oh, and dammit, there is NO way Korean coke is anywhere near as tasty as American coke. I've been to the Coke museum, different recipes for different parts of the world. I was raised on the kind that once contained a narcotic, this sissy watered down version is no match! |

Quit whining. When I first came here, you'd be lucky to find peanut butter at the grocery store, and it would have been some strange overly salty mystery brand from China. Coca Cola was still rarety as Haitai Cola had cornered the market. And back then the Korean won was worth something, so a hagwon job paid half of what you probably get right now. McDonald's was something you'd eat only when you had saved up enough money to go to Seoul (there must have been fewer than 20 of them in all of Korea at that time). The only ethnic food available was Korean.
PS. Stay away from the cans. Coke is crap unless it comes in a glass bottle. |

Best Coca Cola is in the Netherlands, by the way. It's the water. |

| As a coca-cola purist who drank roughly 2liters a day during highschool, on a slow day... I will side with your analysis on the glass bottle. HOWEVER, I have found that the aluminum can coca-cola deposists an aluminumy-tang to the nectar that is quite delicious. And I'm not whining. But if you're going to have commericals on TV that give me an erection in my sleep, you had better have a quarter pounder, thats all I'm saying. |

You don't know about the Coke muesum in Atlanta??? Oh its one of the greatest places in the world, one of the seven wonders. Its as if Willy Wonka isn't a fictional character and compressed his wonderful factory into one place that only serves the greatest beverage (next to beer and bourbon, and anything else alcoholic) in the history of our species. It's where the wine flows like water, with sugar, and carmel flavoring.
Then again, maybe it isn't that great... but what else is there to do in Atlanta, tell me that. |

Holy ulcerative colitis, Batman. And yes, the glass bottle does kick ass...can't get that back at home.
You also can't get the McShanghai Spice burger back at home.
And yes, there are some fucked up pizza toppings here, but you can still choose the toppings you like. I consider it a kind of cultural education that we bring, explaining that corn is wrong on pizza and you are just weird for wanting it.
Also, I had a writing student give me a fictional story about spending a day in Venice and eating in a Mr Pizza there. Nope. |

| I rather like the Bulgogi Burger at McDonalds. At Lotteria try that one or the BulGalbi burger which is nice. Lotteria's french fries and ice cream cones have nothing on McD, though. And what the hell is up with KFC in this country not having any chicken value meals under 5000 won? They have like seven different types of chicken sandwich but actual pieces of chicken... the cheapest meal is 5000 won and has tasteless potato wedges and useless cole slaw and not even a damned biscuit. Christ. |
