Old-time geezers will appreciate the significance of this. The word has been that the heat will not be turned on till December 1. Today is November 15. Yesterday was chilly in our building. Frosty would not be too far off.

So you can imagine my delight when I came in this morning and the Vice Principal pointed at the heating vent in the ceiling and smiled.

The heat is ON!!!

For people who are about to start their first winter in Korea: Normally, government buildings turn the heat on on December 1 and turn it off March 1. The temperature is considered an irrelevant factor. It's all government fiat. So, having heat on Nov. 15 is a major revolution of earth-shaking proportions.

It's bloody freezing in school. The teachers' rooms are fine but elsewhere it feels like mid-winter. I don't see heaters anywhere either. The sudden change in temperature this week has done my head in.

The December 1 edict seems to be in place at out university, except for the classrooms- which are like saunas. Evil or Very Mad

I swear these people were born in a tent.

Ask a friend to translate this expression:

Hey, you! Do you have a long tail?

It's the Korean equivalent of "Were you born in a barn?"

Right, but it's not asking "Are you a barn animal?" but implying that you're trying not to close the door on your long tail. Or maybe both...

I think that was appropriate because the previous poster was complaining that people are not closing the door.

Certainly. I wasn't trying to contradict, but to point out that the idiom may not be as rude as it sounds in this context. (I would hesitate before calling my co-workers barn animals.) Carry on...

The revolution appears to be over. The mess has been cleaned up and no more foul language will be allowed. Move along now, there is nothing to see here, folks. Cool

"Gori-ga-guelda"

="You have a long tail".

ie: you make a mess/knock things over wherever you go/you're clumsy.

Not: "remember to close the door".
