Has anyone else had the census folk by their apt? The lady came by my house just now, and she doesn't speak a word of English, and the forms are in Korean only. She's insistent that foreigners have to complete them too (which makes reasonable sense) but they didn't print any forms in any languages other than Korean!
She wouldn't leave the form for me to take into my school to have someone help me do it, she insisted that it has to be done with her (or so it seems, my Korean is good for day to day life, but not for a situation I've not encountered)...so she left -- quite unhappy that I didn't fill in the form that is not in a language that I speak, and not translatable by the people whose job it is to have the forms filled in. |

I had the same experience last week. The census lady brought by a huge form all in Korean, of course. I told her I would have a chin-gu help me with it. She agreed. Unfortunately, my chin-goo was too busy. So the census lady left in a huff and came back a day or two later with a much smaller form printed in a variety of different languages, one of them being English. It took about 3 minutes to fill it out.
Try to persuade your census lady to get the other form. |

| I just had a visit from a nice Census lady... she's coming back tomorrow night with an English version, although she did attempt to start filling out the form in Korean! |

| I had a census left on my door, I got it when I came home. I guess if I have time I'll have someone at work help me figure it out, unless I can find a form in English. Maybe I'll call and ask tomorrow about that. |

| I got my census in my uni mailbox. Written in about 10 different languages! Took less than 5 minutes to complete. Someone around here is pretty good at taking care of us foreigners!! |

| If anyone has been over here for more than 9 months they shouldn't be complaing about the fact that the form is in Korean. The questions were very easy to answer. I don't know if that applies to people here, but if you have been here for more than 9 months and can't answer those questions in Korean it is a sorry state of affairs. |

Yeah, I got mine in English, too. The English version has a picture of the nice looking waspy waygook couple on it.
I guess I had better fill it out today. |

Yes, you are 100% right.
But I still could not do it, even after 7 years here and 3 years learning Korean.
Could your students, after 9 months of your English lessons - from scratch of course - do the same with the US/UK census form? If yes, I vote you are the "Super-Teacher".
There - you have the next test question. Do drop in and let us know how they get on. |
