Clean energy starts here. FutureGen.

FutureGen is a public-private partnership to design, build, and operate the world's first coal-fueled, near-zero emissions power plant
, at an estimated net project cost of US $1.5 billion. The commercial-scale plant will prove the technical and economic feasibility of producing low-cost electricity and hydrogen from coal while nearly eliminating emissions. It will also support testing and commercialization of technologies focused on generating clean power, capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide, and producing hydrogen. In the process, FutureGen will create unique opportunities for scientific exploration, education, and stakeholder engagement.

From the FAQ section of the above link.

Preliminary estimates are that the plant will require 2500 gallons of water per minute.

The first-of-its-kind FutureGen plant will integrate advanced technologies for coal gasification, electricity production, emissions control, CO2 capture and permanent storage, and hydrogen production at a commercial scale. During normal operations, emissions will be as low as, if not lower than virtually any other coal plant in the world. However it should be noted that there may be criteria emissions, such as NOx, SO2, and particulates, when the plant is starting up and shutting down. An important element of the FutureGen project is to develop during its operation and testing, new and innovative ways to minimize emissions during these transient events.

Don't get me wrong this is better than what we have now and will lead to new technology, but the near zero is not quite near zero.

I think the 'near zero' nomanclature is just misleading.

It is a step in the right direction.

Just a nit.
