ok, just curious, has anyone ever gone to an anma and actually gotten a real massage?
in my small town, i went to one kind of hoping, i really just wanted a massage, i walk in and say "massagy?"
the two guys look at each other, then back at me, and slowly shake their head no.
and another question, do Korean women really know what is going on there? i went there because a korean girl recommended it, she was shocked when i said they werent in teh massage business. |

The scary thing is that AFTER you've been massaged--yes, massaged--and bathed, and otherwise, er, serviced, by an attractive young woman who, ah, isn't exactly wearing any clothes,
You'll be led into a sideroom, provided with a robe, and asked to lie down on the narrow cot beside the wall there.
A muscular MAN, who may or may not be blind, will then enter the room and commence to vigorously punish every part of your body (minus, thanks be to God, one or two) for the bliss you've just enjoyed in the, ah, hands of his female colleague.
Speaking from personal experience, that is. Only went once.

| Find a sports massage place, or a jimjjilbang that offers massage (many do). The downside, it won't be a pretty lady you get your massage from. |

| Anmas are for more than massage as well as many of the "sports massage" places. best to go to places that say "massagey" on the outside or the suanas. |

Unless Korea has changed far more than I realize, you can get a massage almost ANYWHERE. The key is to make it clear what you want. Again (as I've stated this elsewhere), being a licensed masseur in the US, it is essentially an impossibility that I would not get a massage *at least* a few times a year. The key is to make clear what you want. The price should be a lot less than the first price you are given. The masseur/masseus should be blind. (If not, you shouldn't be there no matter what.) So, if the first place turns you down keep wandering into anmas until one will accept you *and* your insistance on only getting a massage.
But you can do the same at the barber shops (not as relaxing). Just stick to your price and decline when they offer more. Wouldn't go to a barber shop unless I wanted a hair cut, manicure, pedicure and a shave, 'cause that's what you should be expecting. So, 1.5 to 2 hours, all the above and a massage for 60 bucks or so? Just TRY to get that in the US!
Just say no to anything else. |

| If you go into a place that offers Thai Traditional Massage, I've heard that you will get a real massage. (I think it's Ÿ in Korean) I knew a guy that went to one of these places on his last night in Korea. He had taught English in Korea for the last five years and wanted to leave Korea with a happy memory. He was pretty disappointed because all he got was a massage. I guess he was expecting it to be more like what he experienced in Thailand. |

That just might be worth the time, hasle and cost of a trip into Seoul. Unless they are doing typical Korean style. Jab, jab, jab, smack, whack, jab, jab... It's like fast deep tissue... Better than nothing, but... |

I don't know much about massages really, but I like this place. One of the guys who does it seemed to be telling me that he trained as a chiropractor but isn't allowed to practice properly because chiropractoring (?) is banned in the RoK.
I might have got the wrong end of the stick there though. |
