I am always looking for a good game. I am trying to figure out a good way to use the format of pig/horse in basketball. (just in case you don't know, one player takes a shot, if he makes it, all players must perform the same shot, failure results in a letter P, then, I, then G, when a players spells pig he is out)
I am thinking like the students make a sentence and use a certain word or word category, like "make a sentence using a color." or "make a sentence using green."
students then have a designated amount of time to make a correct sentence within the requirements.
i cant think of a good solid idea, as this version gives teams that go later more time to prepare.
the point is i want them to create using English, and make it so that the class is competing against each other. they pick the difficulty level and how much to challenge themselves and so on.
if anyone has any good ideas, i would appreciate it .
thanks |

I played "Newspaper Hockey" with my grade 5 kids today & they just loved it. You need some space though.
We made 2 equal rows of chairs facing each other about 2 meters apart. Two desks at either end were the goals. Students on team A were numbered 1, 2, 3, etc & corresponding students on team B were numbered 8, 7, 6, or however many. We designated whose goal was which. The "sticks" were rolled-up newspapers, one on each desk at each end. I placed a tennis ball on the floor at center.
I'd call out a number & the designated students would run grab their sticks & go for it. No hands, kicking the ball, or rough stuff (or there'd be a penalty shot from center at the open goal). Thats it.
Well, the hilarity! Surprisingly nice sportsmanship too. After everyone had a turn we had a 2nd round of 2-on-2. Lots of cheering & high-5s.
As it happens, I had an equal number of boys & girls show up today so thats how they wanted to make up the teams. At that age they love the innocent contact. The boys won handily but the girls played hard & were equally enthusiastic.
Back to the OP. Sure, you could "academicize" your game with sentence-making & such but I'd argue for just letting it be fun. Theres a good bit of real english already involved in just explaining the rules, & refereeing, & the kids are forced quite naturally to articulate their comments.
We did other more serious deskwork beforehand, but the smiles on these kids when they left told me they'd be thinking this week about how much fun english class was. |
