i bought 3 gold fish yesterday and brought them home. i filled a fish bowl with tap water and put them in it. i swear to god last night 2 of them were trying to tell me something. as i watched them from overhead staring down, i swear that the 2 had their mouths and eyes out of the water and seem to be gasping for air or something! it spooked the freakin' shit out of me so i drank a lot of beer and crashed. when i got up this morning the 2 little buggers were dead and my heart broken.
do you think that the tap water was the cause of their deaths and that they had their little heads out of it because they just couldn't stand it? yet, the 3rd gold fish was perfect this morning with nothing at all wrong with it! i'm watching the little bugger swim around like crazy right this minute praying that it makes it through the night. |

| You did de-chlorinate the water, didn't you? You can do it two ways. You can put little pills in and wait a few minutes before putting in the fish, or you can let the water sit for 24 hours (I think that's long enough). Another thing you can do is use well water. Most towns have public wells. |

..or temperature shock. Goldfish are hardy,
but temp changes should be gradual. |

to avoid the temperature shock you put the bag you got the fish in into your fish bowl full of water- and leave it like that for a couple of hours, before pouring them into their new home.
I bet it was the chlorine though. |

| Its too late now but next time take a large 5 gallon dinking water bottle and fill it up and use that for water changes. 24 hours is good, more is better and always keep it filled. Accidents happen and you'll water to spare. |

Um.. Should be before the water change.
And should be chlorine REMOVER. Doesn't take long.
As stated, chlorine is a gas and doesn't stay in water over
24 hours naturally.
Glad to hear the last one's fine. |

yeah, thanks, mole. that last 1 is the only friend i got that can hold its breath underwater for longer than a minute. friends like that are hard to come by.
here's what the pet shop chick gave me to toss in the water when changing it, to keep it clean?
Neutra Chlorine W2000. ( a few drops per rewatered fish bowl )
Nutrafin - biological aquarium supplement W2000. ( a few drops per rewatered fish bowl )
are her instructions correct?
geez...what to do? it's all new to me and got me quite confused, indeed! i want the fish to live, though. |

It sounds like the pet shop lady gave you the right stuff. I'd still keep a bottle of water stuck under the sink, ready to go. Lots of fish die the first day...temperature shock, getting banged around on the way home, just the shock of moving. Fish are fairly sensitive critters...wouldn't you be if you lived in a glass house and had people staring at you all the time?
The hardest part of raising gold fish is getting that darn leash on 'em before you take 'em out for their daily walk.
PS: Don't over-feed. That will kill them faster than anything. And the extra food pollutes the water. |

Sure, they need exercise. *hehe*
But they need acclimatation time.
Gotta get used to their new home.
Pateince is key. Chemical changes
are stressfull for the new arrivals.
Be gentle on them. |

Actually, no. Over-feeding is a problem. If I remember correctly, don't put in more food than the fish can eat in 5 minutes. And only feed once a day.
And it's not a good idea to tap on the side of the bowl. It might seem a friendly gesture to you, but you probably wouldn't like it if someone pounded on your window when they walked by.
BTW, TVs are not a good place to set the bowl. It will warm up the water too much. |
