What is involved in getting a print out of the tax Ive paid this year? How do I get it? Is there a fee or forms to fill out? Do I need to go in person? Whats the deal???

Just call them and get them to fax it to you. You might get some kind of run around or not get someone who speak English on the "Help For Foreigners" number, but they will do it for you if you push them. Or they might not give you any problem at all. I haven't had it done for me, but I am putting that off and just getting signed pay sheets from my boss with the school stamp and his signature. Another story. Anyway, I called them to inquire about how much tax I have paid so far (from my school) and the woman there said something about asking my boss. I told her that he lies (ha) and I don't believe him. Her English was not great and I had no time. Then the receptionist gave me a phone number to call them back because they called back. Same fucking number that I called. Anyway. I know I'm paying too much and don't think my boss is forwarding the money. Not like it's a whole ton, but I should/should've been paying about 44,000 instead of 81,400 that I'm paying now. I mentioned this to my boss and he said that he didn't care if I paid less, but somehow put off my request to tax me no longer since all my taxes are paid for the year. So, he still deducted the same amount again on my last pay. So, I give up. I'm just going to file my taxes at the proper time and if he hasn't paid any, I'll just show them my pay sheets.

If that's what you're paying in income tax alone, something's up... you should only be paying about half that.
(I was taxed the first month I was here and was surprised at how small the amount was! It's that damned pension that we won't get back (as NZers) that takes the big lump every month! Mad )

Definitely too much (unless your making 3 or 4 million a month or something). No pay sheets is a sign that your boss is most likely not paying your taxes.

Get pay sheets! Make them yourself. It gives you peace of mind. Make your boss sign them and stamp it with the company's (school's?) stamp. Show all deductions on your pay sheets.

Anyway, apparently the boss can set the tax although I don't necessarily agree, but I've read somewhere that they can do this. Funny thing is I don't think they are required to give their employees pay statements.

How much has been deducted for taxes each month?

Well after all this going on one of the teachers finally admitted that my boss hasnt been paying my taxes (no big surprise).... I kinda guessed when they avoided answering the question the past 10 times Ive asked. Though now that I need a statement, my boss is in a bit of a panic and will be registering me tomorrow and back paying my payments.

So now the next dillema.... how do I go about getting my money back? Rememer I have been getting 100,000 won deducted from my pay for the past 6 months and nothing has gone into taxes....

How does a fellow teacher know if your taxes have or have not been deducted?

Anyway, make your own pay statements showing all the deductions and get your boss to sign them and put the school's stamp on them. THAT'S WHAT YOU DO. Are you not reading what I took time to type in for you? Are you looking for another way? If you're too afraid to do this then forget about it. I guess you could just tell the tax office what he's been deducting, but what's he going to say? What's he going to do? Think about it.

Ok. I'm calm not. Sorry.

Do what I said and don't contact the tax office. That'll just make things uncomfortable, etc. at work. If you have the proof then you can deal with it when your contract is over.

One other thing you could try is show him what your taxes are supposed to be (much, much less) and have him not tax you anymore. This may not work, but it's worth a try. At least he knows that you are thinking about it. It's a good weapon to use. Mention taxes but don't go the whole nine yards with it. Kind of like a negotiation. He'll most likely waive the whole thing off though because he's Korean and you're a foreigner and "what do you know about Korea"? deal.

Big sursprise. Rolling Eyes I almost hope that they aren't paying it. I'm sadistic (or mashochist) that way. Gives me a reason to give someone hell. Or, better yet, gives me an edge, or upper hand, in the game. Koreans lose face just as much as the Chinese. That's why your boss can't talk to you very long. He's fucking you over. Plus he's arrogant. Fucking pricks. Scum of the fucking earth. Worse than lawyers.

I have pay sheets though they aren't signed or stamped. I pay 5% which is about 100,000 per month, and don't pay pension.

When do we file tax returns in this country? Should I wait until January to get the printout of my taxes paid?

There are 2 teachers that basically know everything about my contract - the boss doesnt speak English, so he needed some help in that area.

I have been 'mentioning' taxes, paystubs, the fact that I know the tax rate, money, etc since I arrived and yes it has been pushed aside every time. I keep getting asked how I know so much actually, because the previous foreign teachers didnt bat an eyelid about any of this stuff.

The boss has done me a pretty decent favor so I am weary about stirring up a fuss. There is another (legal) issue to take into consideration, which affects the figures on my paystub... (which makes getting a paystub difficult). I really like my job, my boss and the teachers, apart from this one thing its been great working there - I still have 6 months to go and I dont want to ruin it. On the other hand I dont want to lose more money over it either.....

Don't look at it as a totally bad thing.

Now that you know that he is *beep*ing around with the taxes, you have the perfect blackmail if he tries anything funny with your contract or pay.

I'm sure if the Korean tax service did an audit of his hackwon, they turn some real interesting stuff. Twisted Evil

If you're making around or under 2 million won a month, then your tax withholdings will be around 35k-44k won a month.

Never, ever more than 50k at the most.

Now where is that weblink to the Korean tax office ...
