| hey. i was wrong. it was shoddy column placement and too much weight on the top floors that did it. i can't beleive that anyone could, with a good conscience, let that happen. |

| Yea, I saw that while I was snoozing on the benches at Bangkok's airport this morning waiting for the A2. They made it look like a fashionable shopping center full of young women. Hardly the crowd that can claw its way out of rubble. |

My korean friend tells me that the samsung exec who was out of the building when it collapsed left early because he knew the danger. He was responsible for the money saving cut backs and got ten years in prison.
He was also quoted as saying, "I'm a victim here too. I lost all my money." People wanted to tear him apart.
Do you think he got started in hogwons? |

2 years before I came to Korea, I saw on The Learning Channel a documentary about the collapse. They claimed the collapse was due to the cement being mixed with all sorts of things to bulk it up cheaply, such as plastic soda bottles.

I am now terrified of the subway stations because they too use the "flat slab" construction method.
I stare at the support columns and wonder when they are going to collapse.
Typical Korean practice of lying to save money no matter who suffers.
The program was really quite good. |

Discovery Channel, huh?
Hmm.. Time to rally the k-troops and launch a big-ass boycott of the local providers of that channel! (a la the fracas over MBC's piece on Herr Doktor Hwang) It's insulting to the national pride to have foreigners watching and talking about such things! 
BTW, it was Sampoong, not "Sangpoong". I and a few friends were there days after. Scenes you can't forget. Volunteers were crawling all over the place, tents set up nearby, donated food & drinks for the rescue workers... |

I'm terrified of the subway, too.
I'm terrified of the roads caving in beneath me. I stare at the protective metal slabs that cover the roads where they're doing work beneath, and wonder when they're going to cave in.
I'm terrified of landslides behind my house. It's been raining here quite a bit, and where the hillside is a bit patchy, I saw some earth trickling down the other day.
I'm terrified of the elevators at school. It says plain as day the maximum capacity on the inside of the elevator, but the students, do they take heed? Noooooo, piling in there like a scrummage until the elevetor starts going beep beep beep and I'm scared witless. I have to take the stairs up 8 flights.
I'm also terrified of: buses, bus drivers, taxis, taxi drivers, subway carriages, subway doors, escalators, umbrellas opening too fast, pointy sticks and the dog that barks at me as I walk to work every day.
It's a wonder I can actually leave the house in the morning. |

how can yuou be afraid of the subways, for every stop they have one flashlight, one fire extinquisher, and one gas mask...
Actually, I think in the event of emergency- you have faaaaaar more to worry about the crowd here than the actual problem. |
