Bush Is First U.S. President in Mongolia

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia, Monday, Nov. 21 - President Bush on Monday became the first sitting American president to visit Mongolia, stepping out of Air Force One into a frigid plain. He came to this capital to hail a young democracy that has sent troops to Iraq.

President Bush stood with President Nambariin Enkhbayar of Mongolia during a ceremony on Monday marking the first visit there by a sitting American president.

In comments delivered outside the main government hall where protesters ousted a Communist government 15 years ago, Mr. Bush said that "America is proud to be called your 'third neighbor,' " a reference to how the country is sandwiched between Russia and China.

Surrounded by Mongolian troops dressed in their spiked hats, Mr. Bush told residents of this country of 2.7 million people that "Americans and Mongolians have much in common."

"Both our nations were settled by pioneers on horseback who tamed the rugged plains," he said, a reference to the age of Ghengis Khan. "Both our nations shook the yoke of colonial rule, and built successful free societies. And both our nations know that our responsibilities in freedom's cause do not end at our borders - and that survival of liberty in our own lands increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands."

Among those in front of him were two Mongolian soldiers who fatally shot a suicide truck bomber in Iraq before he could set off his deadly cargo.

Accompanied by his wife, Laura, Mr. Bush looked more relaxed and happy than at any point in his eight-day Asian tour. He reviewed the troops, standing on a red carpet in a capital still struggling to find the resources to rebuild from cold war ruins.

"Free people did not falter in the cold war," Mr. Bush said. "And free people will not falter in the war on terror."

I was hoping he would talk very slowly during his speech, just as if he was speaking at a school for mentally disabled kids.

"So, Mr. President, how was your trip to Mongolia?" "Oh, I just love those little retards. It brought tears to my eyes when I saw that they had even elected a president. Now these little retards know the true meaning of freedom. Their president even put on a suit to greet me. It was so cute. God bless his little mind."
