| The situation is this. My boss doesnt work here so theres me and one other foreign teacher, but no Korean teacher in the academy. Theres this one middle school kid who has huge behaviour problems. But we cant lose him cos our hagwon is losing money. I cant ignore him and just teach the other students cos he is a major distraction, ie, shouting, throwing shit around (including my stuff). So Ive tried everything in the book. What else is there to do? |

| Can you keep him late after class? If so, I found this works wonders. How does your hagwon run without any Korean teachers there? What if someone rings? What if theres a problem? |

Tried it. He ends up throwing chairs around the class and any other thing he can get his hands on.

Well usually we say that the boss is away working at another job at a university so he cant be here until late. If they want to talk to him they call him on his cellphone.

If someone rings then I can normally decipher and get the general gist of what they want. There can be an adult student on hand to help interpret as well
And as for when theres a problem? Well thats when I turn to the friendly internet aliases at Dave cos Im at the end of the line!!!!! |

I can't believe you hogwan is so hard up it can't afford to lose a single student. Have the powers that be thought perhaps that other students may leave because of one nutter disrupting the class. That my friend is why I woud never work at a hogwan. Get someone to call his mum then kick him out, FOR GOOD
My advice get yourself a beating stick and don't be afraid to use it! |

Put him in the front row. Involve him more. Figure out if his English level is higher (challenge him more) or lower (give easier tasks).
Throwing stuff around? My stuff? I'd get very angry and put the fear of his ancestors into him. He would be given a huge yellow card and told the next time he is out the door. The next time: he's out.
I teach as well as I can, and on the best terms I can to do my best.
Fire me if you don't like how I bust my gut for my students. But nobody touches my stuff (my bag at the front) and all the students know it. And nobody throws stuff around the classroom.
It DOESN'T MATTER whether there's a Korean teacher in the school or not. The classroom belongs to the teacher as long as the teacher claims it as one's own. I don't get paid enough to put up with such crap.
I teach. Students learn. We play games sometimes and have fun. But everyone gets along, or else are gone. It's that simple. I have kicked several students out of the classroom and all but one have begged to come back in.
Take no crap and they will quickly LEARN. Kids know what they can get away with and what they can't. They read you like a book.
What the hell can you do?
Get a backbone and "yellow card" the student next time, with enough restrained anger in your voice to let him know you mean business. You tell him where to sit, where everybody sits.
But I don't know... Several studies have shown that students like teachers who are tough at first and slacken as time goes by... students resent teachers who are easy at the start and get tougher over time. |

| If this kid was in one of my classes he would be in the corner facing the wall with a trash can held above his head untill his arms ached so much he couldn't hold it any longer. If he kept actin' a fool he would have to turn that trash can over and drop it like its hot. It may not be in the Dave's teachers guide but you could give it a try. It is sure to be more of a deterrent than 'yellow carding' him, kids like that eat yellow cards for breakfast. |

| The kid wants attention. Putting him in the corner with the trash can over his head will be exactly what he wants. You need to put him outside the classroom, far from the door, where the others can't see or hear him. It's not about anger or revenge. You need a quiet classroom because you have a lesson to teach. If he's willing to be quiet, he can come in. |

Love stick..I'm with Fidel on this one. Bring in a nice sized switch and dont be afraid to use it on the little SOB.
Throwing stuff around videotape it....get your boss to have the students mother come in and show her the kids behaviour!
You are the adult...he is the kid....he can only act that way if you let him.
Kneeling on the floor, turfing him outside....or throw him out of the school! |

give him the attention he wants...
get every kid in that class to ridicule him, call him "aggi" and "babo", have the kids make fun of him in English. Break him down, have him look at himself as a baby that no one likes. After class, grab him by the scruff of the neck, or whatever it takes to keep his ass in the room. Explain to him SLOWLY that he is a good kid (lie), a smart kid (lie harder), and is truly one of your favourites (squeeze it out). Then tell him how its his behaviour that is stupid. Give him some compliments about what he does well, and give him a sense of pride. Then let him go and get a shot of bourbon. |

Tell him to "Get out of here!" You don't have to put up with that. You're not getting paid to improve the kid's behavior. You're getting paid to teach. There's a certain level that you should put up with and try to control, but performing exorcisms is probably not a clause in your contract. If parents want to send their kids to your class, they should make them behave. Don't beat/hit anyone. That's not your job either.
I've made students leave for much, much less. I think that usually the parents pull their kids out because the kid is not putting the effort forward to warrant the money they spend. |

Perhaps he is the reason why the school is losing money?

This kid is hurting your ability to teach and destroying more than stuff, he's destroying the reputation of your school. Kick him out. If the boss isn't there, do it on your own authority. Just do it. Send him home. If he has to ride in a Hogwan van or gets picked up, make him wait outside the building until his ride comes.
After you do it, explain it to your boss. At my school, we kick the bad kids out. Yellow card - Warning. Red card - call the mother and give her the warning. Black card - OUT! Game Over.
We always get a bunch of new applicants after we kick out a bad kid. Maybe you will too. Actually, after we did it a few times, we had no more bad kids. They usually cry at the hint of a yellow card. |

Did you try calling his mother? Surely there's a fluent Korean speaker who can help you out.
He may have one of those mothers who thinks their kid sh*ts gold, but then again he may not. |
