Koreans are religious
Indeed, Korea is a paradise of religions!
In Korea even political ideologies often become religions. North Korea, for example, is a nation that resembles a devout, fanatical religious group worshipping Communism and only one Godlike leader.... The problem is that in a religious country like Korea everything tends to be religious - sometimes fanatically so - including adherence to political beliefs. Akin to a species of religious martyrdom, our political ideology becomes something to die for.
If we let our children be brainwashed by some ultranationalist, jingoist teachers, Korea's future will be grim indeed.... Meanwhile, religious fanaticism easily provokes conflict, even war, and fuels dastardly terrorist activities that massacre so many innocent people.

Perhaps we should teach our children not to be too religious and let them know that we do not live in this world alone and that we should tolerate others and live with them in understanding and peace. Classrooms are the incubators of our future citizens. If we let our children be brainwashed by some ultranationalist, jingoist teachers, Korea's future will be grim indeed.

I thought this paragraph was balanced and thoughtful. Just the opposite of ultranationalism. |

A couple weeks ago, my girlfriend and I were walking around and decided to go to a Buddhist temple a couple blocks away. This woman stops and asks my girlfriend if we're here to see the temple.
My girlfriend answers yes. The woman says, "Do you believe in that stuff?" and my girlfriend, not wanting to be rude, says "Okay."
Then the woman starts ranting, "Well you're going to hell" and follows us all the way there, shouting all sorts of Christianity crap at us in Korean.
Finally we work up the nerve to go in, and the kids playing out front of the place all screech (Jesus) and run away. We weren't sure what they said, but then another kid walked by and saw us, screamed the same thing more clearly, and ran away.
In conclusion: it's a great country for religion, if you're Christian. |
