There's a certain music video out these days by a Moon ..something or other. Guy with a really bad hair-do, horribly depressing song, and in the video he's a struggling artist trying to make it in the US. At one point he gets kicked out of a bar and the bouncer points towards a "White only" sign. Everytime I see this it get ticked off. (and not just cuz of the bad English)

Not being from the States, I can't say for certain, but isn't it illegal to have these kinds of signs? If they aren't illegal, than I have no argument here. But if it is as I think, than I am not happy

I know it shouldn't bug me. But I just get this picture of self-righteous Koreans watching the video and thinking something like "damn waygookins' are so racist". While in fact, they're the ones with signs that say "no foreigners" or have clubs that jack up the cover prices for foreigners.

Every time I see it I try to shrug it off as just another pitiful music video, but for some reason it sticks with me. I just hate the misrepresentation.

yes signs like that *are* illegal, and at least, severely frowned upon by the GENERAL American population.

I guess the Asian struggle in America continues...when will this continent ever know success in the supposed "land of opportunity"?

(and so help me god if anyone corrects me and tells me that in fact asians are QUITE successful in the USA. I am being sarcastic.)

Everybody knows Koreans can't be racist. Reminds me of a preachy song by Mike Park, called "From Korea:"

Quote:

Screw this im leaving
i dont need a racist friend
and im not like you
Im from Korea
my eyes are small
but your eyes are closed
and im not like you
Im from Korea

As Asians Enter, White Students Leave
According to white students, they avoid schools with many Asian students because "the competition is too keen and the diversity in curricular subjects cannot be guaranteed." Since according to some, the curriculum is designed in favor of the Asian students, it is more focused on math and science subjects rather than liberal arts and art education. Therefore some say there is an imbalance of subjects, and extracurricular activities, including physical education, are being largely neglected.

A new colloquial phrase dubbed "white student syndrome" is being used in U.S. education circles, which refers to the isolation and inferiority complex that white students sometimes go through in Asian-dominated schools.

It is BS. I doubt there is anywhere in the US other than some backwater location nobody but generational locals go to that a sign like that could exist.

I'd like to take a camera with me into Koreatown in LA and film just how many places I wouldn't be able to get into, however.

It bugs me too. Is it deliberate misrepresentation, wilful ignorance, or shocking ignorance? They should change the sign in the video to 'No retards'.

Yes, signs like that are illegal. If I'm not mistaken, they have been illegal since Brown vs Board of Education (1954). It has to be deliberate misrepresentation.

On a related note, some of you may be interested in a thread on the Current Events Forum entitled Canadian Myths. There is an interesting post about the topic of a speech to be given by Korean students.

However, it is not only the white students that feel isolated. Asian students, who account for 60% to 70% of the whole school sometimes do not have a chance to get access to various cultures, and thus experience a cultural isolation of their own, according to the Wall Street Journal.

asian people experiencing cultural isolation? hold the front page, jimmy, we've got a shocking new story.

Actually, it was Heart of Atlanta Hotel, INC. Versus the United States (1964) which determined that public buildings and businesses can not discriminate due to race, religion, gender, (or now) sexual orientation. This is HOTLY enforced by the public. Essentially, if this sign was put up at a club at 9pm, there'd be a protest at 10.
I do think the artist was being metaphorical though and suggesting that only white artists can make it in the US. White artists like Usher, Jennifer Lopez, and Hoobastank (gyopos).

You know those pictures of George Bush that are photoshopped to overlay a picture of a monkey's face? He isn't actually a monkey, even if it's funny to compare him to one.

I suspect it's the same with this video. Not meant to be taken literally, but rather as a statement on how impossible it is for a Korean or other Asian singer to make it big in the US. How many famous Asian musicians and singers can you think of that made their fame in the US? I can't think of any. The US apparently has a giant Korean Wave splash guard in place.

Considering how many black and latino artists there are, though, the sign should really have read "no Asians" not "whites only", but of course we all know that only whites live in the US.

I am not from America, but have travelled there. As with other Western countries, I have never been excluded from a venue on account of my race. I have been excluded on account of my race from a number of places in Korea.

Perhaps a Black Ameican could pick up on it and get kicked out of a bar in Korea that says 'No Nigerians Allowed'.

did i miss the sarcasm here? anyways, the guys from hoobastank aren't gyopos. the one dude's japanese/korean. linkin park's DJ is korean-american, but that's probably the most famous gyopo to make it in the US music industry(minus su-jin pak).
