I saw a posting for the incident and a video clipping for it as well. Anyone know where it is ? I have checked back a few pages, but can't seem to find it.

It was deleted for fear of enraging Korean netizens, as this thread will also be.

I believe the mother will be on Oprah next Tuesday. Should be a tear-jerker.

I saw that on the news, was pretty worrying. I can't believe a mother could be that lax in caring for her child. At that age I was on reins.

I didn't really see anything wrong with what the mother did- it was just a (very nearly horrendous) accident.

Ok, now I am confused. I was referring to the incident I saw on the news last week, where a child was merrily toddling towards the edge of the subway platform and fell off on to the track. Its mother was nowhere to be seen.

Having looked at the clip you post SJ, I agree with you. The mother was totally blameless.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I see 2 year olds running around in the street while cars are trying to dodge them. I guess the parents think that if the kid is started on kimchi early enough, it's invincible.

It doesn't surprise me one bit; the older subways here sometimes have a relatively huge gap between the car and the platform, and my fiancee actually got shoved while exiting a car, and her leg went straight down; it was a miracle she wasn't killed, but it'll take more than a horrific baby death to affect change in the ROK.

On the other hand, I see a lot of bad mothers everywhere in the world, but in Korea it can get bad. We were strolling through a kids park in Daegu a few years ago, and they had a mini-train set up for kids to ride in; not fast enough to send them flying, but heavy and big enough to cause damage if hit by one.

Anyway, I see this toddler (maybe 20 months old) staggering towards the train when he stands in front of it and stops--I run over and grab it out of harm's way, and the kid starts bawling; where's the mother? Over on a bench, talking on her cell phone. I let her have it in a steady stream of Greek, Portuguese, Italian, and good old Anglo-Saxon, while some old ajumma who'd witnessed the whole thing gave her the Korean translation. I was never more disgusted than that day, as far as child care goes.

I can't believe how racist you people are! You are not at home anymore. You are in Korea, and you must do as Koreans do.

Koreans have a long history of dragging babies along subway platforms while the conductor ignores them. Koreans have a long history of ignoring even the most basic safety concepts. It is part of their culture. We have no right to criticize it, nor to try to change it.

Make an effort to fit in. I am going to let my baby play on the subway tracks tomorrow. At least I am making an effort. Rolling Eyes
