PostPosted: Thu Nov 24, 2005 8:02 am    Post subject: I made two signs. Reply with quote

The first sign is taped to a drawer on my desk at work. It's the drawer where I keep all the important things, such as cell phone, keys, loose change, special candy, etc. Prior to making this sign, I'd been having problems with students rumaging through it as they pleased while I was teaching. (My co-teacher never saw fit to tell them to keep out.) The day I decided enough was enough was, about 3 months ago, when a student got ahold of my cell phone and, perhaps accidentally, reset it, which erased all contact information, stored messages, etc. That day, after putting a password lock on my phone, I made the following sign:

׾!

It means "Open and die!" After taping it to my drawer, I took all the students in to let them see it, laugh, and then look at my stone cold gaze and stop laughing. Since that time, I've had exactly two instances of students opening that drawer. The first was a favorite student of mine who was messing around and trying me. The second was a student who was checking on an item I'd confiscated the day before. He didn't remove the item, but merely looked at it, and immediately reported himself to me after he'd done it to make sure his life was still safe.

Next to the death drawer is another drawer where I keep frivilous candy and random things. There have been times when I tell a student to look in the death drawer and get something, and even though they know which drawer I meant, they'd go to the benign drawer out of fear. I'll have to repeat it a few times to get them to open the death drawer.

That sign has revolutionized my life. I can put things in my drawer and feel secure that they'll be there when I'm finished teaching. What a feeling.

The second sign is one I made tonight. I've grown dissatisfied with the daily door droppings. You know, those advertisements that are plastered on the door every day. I despise them. It's just more trash for me to fumble with when I come home. So, after cleaning my door again tonight, I made this sign:

: . ٽ ġ, Ը Ұž. ȸ.

Which means, "Attention: Do not give me ads. If you post them again, I will boycott your store. Churches too." And I wrote it with a calligraphy pen, so it looks purdy, unlike the gawdy adverts.

So, I hope it works. And I hope my neighbors don't think I'm psychotic. I suspect two things may happen:

1. Mindless advertisement spammers will ignore the sign.
2. Someone in my building will remove the sign.

But then, I never expected the drawer sign to work, either. Here's to a wing and a prayer!

Add "and die" to it and see what happens. I'm tempted to post one myself. Maybe if they have magnets, they can post restaurant ads....

Wow.. good luck... we don't have adverts on our door anymore because we left everything on the door for about a month without removing a single thing and I think those people just think that no one lives here anymore and they don't bother climbing up 3 flights of stairs for nothing.. lol.

The door beneath us, however, has those and no one is there, so if I need anything, I take a quick look at that door to see if there is an advert that sells what I need... quite useful.

You most likely convince them that they can go into your desk some way or somehow and that's why they do. Then you make a stupid sign and try to brag how you can write the simplest writing language on earth.

Give me a fucking break.

I thought about doing that, but I think the mess would drive me crazy. Pretty smart idea about using the neighbors' adverts, though. Smile

I tried that at two different apartments. Either the manager removes them or the next delivery guy removes them, because every so often my door is clean for about an hour.

Have to agree...my eyes hurt from the DH avatar...

plus whenever I am reading on here I can't help but wonder if you are not a silver haired german woman humming knightrider while lustfully ironing and watching baywatch...

Normally I would say Jacl was being a bit harsh...but it really burns the eyes...and I feel woozy like I watched 80 hours of Pokemon while hooked up to a caffeine I.V. Shocked

Nah, I can only imagine. Would've saved me some trouble, for sure.

Fear and intimidation have always been effective tools of the more powerful.

My students wouldn't dare ever try. Probably because of how I react when they have looked in my bag in the classroom.

"No looking !"

Some things are a matter of life and death,
and the students quickly learn what they are.
