Anyone have directions to Hahoe Village in Andong? Is there anything else worth seeing in Andong? Am planning a weekend getaway with my friend, but neither of us has ever been there before. Thanks for any information in advance!

There's a bus that runs to Hahoe from the Andong bus terminal but it doesn't run very often - every couple hours maybe. There are some minbaks in Hahoe, you can stay in some pretty traditional-looking houses. Also there are restaurants. So an overnight stay there is feasible. At the front entrance you can buy an informative booklet (in English) about Hahoe that costs a thousand won.

There's several tourist things in the Andong area, mostly out-of-town a ways - a Confucian academy, a museum, a lake, etc.... Lots of restaurants and good eating in Andong, an interesting fairly good-sized market. Quite a few motels and yeogwans just north of the train and bus stations (the two stations are on the same street, just a couple blocks apart.) The tourist bureau is in front of the train station and you can get a map of Andong and other tourist literature.

I first visited Andong in 1997 and it was considered to be the "real Korea." It's become a lot more modernized just since then but still is an interesting place - well worth a weekend visit or two....

I went there for the Mask Festival this year. Im not sure what there is to do there though, we stuck to the festival (which included a trip to hahoe village). The bus to the village was pretty regular during the fetival though. You can stop at the tourist info at the train station (which is right next to the bus station).

buseoksa (buseok temple) is stunning. try to go there after a heavy snowfall. it's really worth checking out. dosan suwon, the confucian academy, is on the back of the 1000 won note, near andong and also worth checking out.

eat some andong godeungeoh (salted mackerel). it's amazing.

The Hahoe village itself is a bit in the sticks. If you're driving, you shouldn't have trouble finding the road signs that indicate its location once you are near Andong. I just love eating at the little mud houses/restaurants in the village.

Bus no:46 runs from opposite the BusTerminal to Hahoe Maul every 40 minutes or so, you can also get to Byeongsan Seowon on the same bus, which is just around the corner from Hahoe and a good spot on the river.
Bus 67 leaves about 200metres up the street from the hahoebus, outside Andong elementary school and heads to DosanSeowon, stay on the bus past Dosan (youve seen it already on the note right?), because 15km past it is the awesome Cheongryangsan provincial park, a spectacular mountain with great hiking, whitewater Nakdong river and a beautiful temple.
Bus54 from opposite the terminal heads to Jebiwon, the big carved Buddha from KimKiDuks springsummerwinterfall, 5km outside Andong toward Yeongju.
Bus51 goes to BongJeongsa, oldest wooden building in korea, and a peaceful temple, the english speaking volunteer guide is called Suji shes lovely
Juwhangsan National Park is not far from Andong, the bus leaves from the terminal.
and theres always the soju museum, tour done in english one sunday a month (i think) bus 34, 36, its just across the river 1700won taxi
If youre keen and capable you can also hire my motorbike, payment in soju and anju of course.
