Ok guys,

Next week we're starting the countdown to Christmas. So we're doing an exercise on the various "bits" of Christmas;
1. the days around xmas (advent, boxing day etc.) do americans even have boxing day, its an old holiday for servants from victorian times in the uk.

2. xmas dinner

3. xmas gifts

4. the xmas story

Now the idea is I put these up on the walls and give each group a set of questions. The person writing the answers must remain seated at all times. We did a similar thing where they wrote a story and it was very successful, but i think this might be a smidgen too hard for them. They must actively read the different sheets to find the relevant bits of info. As this involves effort I think a lot of the weaker students wont even bother.

Any tips on how to make it a little easier? I've highlighted words from the questions which appear in the text as a hint. I.e.

How do we count down to Christmas?

(In the writing, Advent calendars are used to count down to Christmas by many children in the UK)

Its for first and second grade middle school, any other tips on how I can make it seem less challenging to them....?

Advent calendars are cool. Been a long time since I saw one. Maybe they could make them as a class project? Don't know where you might find glitter here but there must be some somewhere.

Sorry I don't have any more helpful ideas for you.

As far as I know, we have neither boxing day nor advent calendars. I don't even know what they are, although I have heard references to them.

Wow that sucks, advent calanders rock, they count down the 24 days to xmas, each day you open a door and u get a chocolate and a small festive picture.

Boxing day was the christmas for servants in victorian times. As I understand it their employers filled boxes with small gifts and gave them to the servants.

I remember having advent calendars when I was a kid, but we don't have boxing day at all.

I always thought that 'Boxing Day' referred to the day after Christmas when the maid came in to clear away all the boxes and wrapping paper.
