Katie Holmes' mission impossible will be giving birth without painkillers - or screaming.

That's because her fianc, "Mission Impossible" star Tom Cruise, is a Scientologist.

Practitioners of Scientology are against drugs but insist on "silent birth" because they believe it's traumatic for babies to hear their mothers groan or cry.

"Maintain silence in the presence of birth to save the sanity of the mother and the child and safeguard the home to which they will go," church founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote in his best-selling "Dianetics."

That's easier to preach than practice.

Another famous Scientologist, actress Kelly Preston, told Redbook magazine in 2000 that she screamed for an epidural while giving birth at home to daughter Ella.

But her husband, actor John Travolta, who is also a Scientologist, didn't have time to drive Preston to the hospital.

"It got hard-core at the end because she was big," Preston said of her 13-hour ordeal.

Travolta later described it as a "beautiful, still experience that lovingly brings a child into the world without screaming or talking."

Of course, he didn't have the baby.

Scientologists also favor seven days of silence for newborns so their first week on Earth is trauma-free. But this has run afoul of state-mandated blood tests, which require at least a pinprick.

Remember, Xenu will it!

I have a lot more respect for Nicole Kidman now.

Reminds me of an old joke.

A woman who is about to give birth is consulting with her doctor. The doctor says, "We'd like to test a new machine on you which will allow you to share birthing pains with the father." The woman agrees, and her husband scoffs, "What pain?"

While the woman is in labor, the doctor sets the machine to 1/4. "Now the father of this baby will feel 25% of the pain for you." The woman says, "It's working!" The husband laughs, "I feel nothing. Women are whiners." So the doctor turns it up to 1/2. "Still nothing!", says the husband. "All this moaning about pain is a coverup!" The doctor finally sets the machine to 100%, and the woman feels great. The husband mockingly says, "I told you that childbirth pain is a scam! I didn't feel anything!"

The couple comes home with their new baby the next day to find the mailman dead on their doorstep.

South Park - Tom Cruise Won't Come Outta The Closet
11/21/2005 6:46:34 AM

It turns out Stan is the reincarnation of scientology founder Ron L. Hubbard. Tom Cruise can't handle it when Stan tells him he's only an 'OK' actor and locks himself in Stan's closet.

Any other interpretation of this phrase is purely coincidental Laughing

Mr. guitar,

Even if Mr. Cruise is gay, what is it to you? Does it alter his acting ability? Does it alter in any way the way any one looks at him except for the small-minded ones who think a private sex life is important to anyone else?

Did you watch the South Park scene? Here's the whole episode. You can bet the Scientologists are gonna be screaming "Sue !!! Sue !!!" Laughing

Here ya go. Free for you to download!

912 - Trapped in the Closet
Airdate: 2005-11-16
11/21/2005

One of the best South Park episodes in a long time, they give the secrets of scientology away in this one. Aprox. 36 Megs, 22 minutes.

NB: CNN has removed it's video report covering this controversy of this episode. There was even a POLL on its site just yesterday as well.

I just betcha it's Xenu !!! Twisted Evil

Regardless of whether a woman's screaming will affect her child in a traumatic way or not, why couldn't you have a silent child birth. If you feel pain you don't have to scream. It isn't like it makes the situation better or relieves it. Screaming is more of a reaction we're taught, just like when a child falls and scrapes his knee. First thing they do is look around to see who's watching and if someone is, turn on the tears and start screaming. If not, they just get up and walk away. Sure they feel the pain still, but you don't have to be a baby. Just because our Moms probably screamed giving birth and that's the way you see it on TV doesn't mean there isn't another way a woman can react.

I figure if a woman is giving birth, certainly if she was giving birth to my child, it's her party, and she can cry if she wants to.

This is stupid.

I gave birth to Letty all naturally, with the minimal amount of drug - I had just one shot of diamorphine, the name of the drug escapes me right now - and I screamed bloody murder!!! Now look at Letty!! She smiles at everyone, laughs at everything and is such a happy child.

Actually, my husband told me that I really didn't scream all that much and he was surprised that I was fairly calm.... hmmm....

Please! Silent childbirth and a week of silence so the baby is calm? What about when the baby itself is screaming its head off because of hunger or wet diaper or general baby trauma? Is it okay to talk/laugh/sing/whatever while the child is screaming?

Scientology is soooo stupid.

But people can believe whatever they want to believe.
