how long are canadians for sure really andtruly allowed to stay here?
some, actulaly many have said six months. i find this dubious given americans only get one, and brits three. i want to be sure as mine is UP in a couple of days time... i know poor planning....

so if its six good. hurrah for me

if its three god love a duck!!!!! how the hell do i get an extension? especially an extension when not actually leaving the country? can i beg someone? do i actually have to go out? will i have to pay based on time i was here over my three months? i have a ticket out in three weeks. that will make me around two weeks over threemonths.

please advise.

They don't base VISA length on how long Americans or Brits get. It's based on how long Canadians give them in Canada. Canadians get 6 months for a tourist VISA.

A Canadian gets 6 months for a tourist visa in Korea, just as a Korean gets 6 months for a tourist visa in Canada. But the Korean is not permitted to work in Canada under a tourist visa and nor are you permitted to work in Korea under a tourist visa.

On a related note, work is permitted (in both countries) if one is on a business trip and working for a company outside the country being visited.

The reason we get 6 months is that #1 we give them 6 months and although this is not a quote I have heard from Koreans the goverment likes to cause Americans a little pian while trying to stay in korea.

To the OP: You're here to teach English. Please demonstrate some ability with that language on Dave's. Hence, don't write like a moron.

To the OP part II: If you are here to teach English on a tourist visa...you are aware that this is illegal right? There is a crackdown underway right now to catch just such teachers.

Just thought you should know.

Ummmm you don't look like the original poster. Those remarks were directed at the crap English found there, ie kshellru. You posting from two accounts? Actually, in my capacity as an editor for my U paper, I've always found math and science types to be far better writers than English and Journalism majors.

Then you have no worries.

I am the original poster. So sorry that I insulted you with my poor English and gramatical skills. I am NOT an English teacher, but rather someone who is here visiting, and needs to find out about her TOURIST visa, hence the questions regarding the length of time a tourist may stay in Korea. However, if I have offended anyone with my writing/English skills, I apologize. As the editor of a paper, perhaps you could work through all posts here that don't concern you and randomly assist people with their grammar skills so that we can ALL be better speakers, writers, and people in general.

I would also like to THANK the sincere people who answered my question. I am always impressed with the generosity of people here who help others out with their questions and concerns, for the simple joy of helping another human out. I am always amazed by the spiteful and I must say, bizarre behaviour of others who for some reason find it necessary to cut people down for trying to sell a computer at too high a price (when they aren't even looking to buy), and by people who like to read others' posts in order to critisize their grammar!!

My name is Kathleen Shellrude, and you can google me to find that, surprisingly, I, too, am a published writer, whose work is actually TAUGHT in universities. You may also be surprised to find that I, too, was an editor for a scholastic journal. However, I have NEVER felt it necessary to correct people's writing styles when they're casually writing posts.

You don't know when your visa is up, so you ask here?

Uuuuummmmmmmmmmm LOOK IN YOUR PASSPORT. There will be a stamp. It will tell you.

I too am a published author and former columnist for one of Canada's largest daily newspapers. But you know what? I'm not a lazy ass like you. I don't just vomit up words on a message board and expect readers to trudge through my puke and figure out what I'm saying. I use periods at the end of sentences. I put spaces between my words. I put a capital at the start of sentences to make it easier for readers to figure out when I'm starting a new sentence. You know, all those niceties that make reading easier on people.

You're a bloody embarrassment to the writing profession and I'm damn glad you're not about to expose your sloth to students and parents spending hard-earned money thinking they're getting a teacher who gives a flying fluk.

mindmetoo, you're spot on with your critique.

Best be careful around Ms. Shellrude. She's a "published author whose work is taught at universities" (all hail her power and might!), but nonetheless apparently incapable of googling basic tourist visa information. Yet, strangely, she is encouraging others to google her name.

She's a feminist writer, to boot. *shiver*

Run for the hills!

I gotta go with the op on this 1. It's an anonymous message board with people here to get or give info. If it was meant to be anything more there would be a spell checker. To fly into a rant about grammar here and call them an embarrassment who writes sloth etc etc is ridiculous. She merely wants some visa info and gets flamed. And then when she puts out her credentials, she gets flamed further.
I'm embarrassed to work in the same profession as these 2 Ms. Shellrude. Most of us try to be helpful and decent like jawaninseoul.
