I am just about to move to Cheongju, any good tips on the city would be great, places to hang out, drink, eat, catch a movie etc would be greatly apprciated.
If anyone takes pity on me and might want to be a friend should get in touch too, am very easy going and am told am quiet funny but it is definetly an accquired taste of humour (mainly very dark but I like to keep things fresh). |

I spent 4 years in Cheongju. Nice place.
There are 3 main movie theaters. Jeunesse, which is downtown in the main shopping area. Kinopia in Sacheondong, the main eating and drinking area for a lot of foreigners. DreamPlus (dream something) right beside the express bus terminal. I have never been to the latter, Kinopia was always my preference.
If you have a hankering for a western style buffet there is Olive Farms, which puts out a pretty good spread. It is near the coffee shop Wall Street, and the post office.
If you want Korean fare, or the BEST Italian food you will find then SacheonDong, where Kinopia is, will suit you. Riccone has the best Italian food I have had. Pricey compared to Korean food, but more than worth it. You will also find pork, chicken, and beef places all over the place. There is even a subway shop there.
For drinking, SacheonDong as well. It depends on what you want. If you want western style I would suggest Road King or The Attic. Road King is across the street from Morning Calm coffee. Worst fricking coffee I EVER had was there. RK has live music Friday and Saturday night. The Attic has all you can drink for 17,000 won for guys on Saturday nights if that turns your crank. 7,000 won for the ladies. Korean style, well they are all over the place too.
If you are looking for something specific let me know. |

Cheongju kicks ass. It's got some of the best bands in the country. If you can stand hardcore, look up 13 Steps and the MF Crew. |

I lived in Cheongju for a year and here are afew of my tips:
1. Western food shopping: Lotte Mart (near the bus station), Carrefour (downtown), and E-Mart. Also, whenever you take the bus back from Seoul, go to the Shinsegae dept store connected to the terminal. The basement is full of imports. Your sour cream will definitly last the 1.5 hour bus ride back to Cheongju
2. Chungdae Chungmun is where all the western bars are. Road King is not bad, Woodstock has pool tables too. Riccone's is not as good as the previous poster says. It is still mediocre korean italian. Not worth the price. I can cook better stuff at home.
3. Final piece of advice--go to Seoul at least twice a month to keep your sanity. Itaewon is like paradise after Cheongju
4. One more. New Yorker coffee on the ped street downtown used to have english Time magazine and sometiems a few others. And decent coffee. They even have roof seating in the summer! |

I live in Cheongju right now, and am far from knowledgeable about the city but I have found that nice places to eat are fairly easy to find, and there is a movie theatre in the nearby market to watch their latest english flick. I
