I see these signs all over the place. This one is in the school where I teach.

I've had to scratch my head over what they're trying to say. I think what they mean to say is "Emergency Exit." However, in a real emergency I think this sign would confuse me more than help.

Has anybody seen these ridiculous pieces of Konglish? Were you scratching your head too?

Didn't we have this thread a month ago? It's a descending life line sign, not an emergency exit sign. It's a kind of a rope and pulley that you can lower yourself out of the window with. I've never seen one in action though.

Hmmm. That's interesting. I should look out that window and see if there's a rope out there. I was looking in the ceiling to see if there was something that dropped out. I didn't know what to think about it.

Why is it that every Korean I asked about it didn't know what it was either? This is concerning. Can anyone who reads Korean tell me if it's equally confusing in Korean?

Hmm. Maybe it's not there anymore. There should be a sort of metal arm that you can extend out the window. The rope/harness itself may be in a cabinet nearby. I really would like to see how one of these things works, though I'm not going to try it myself, I have a feeling they're tested less often than fire extinguishers are.

Hmm... and I thought "Descending Life Line" was a warning to palm readers.

there's one in my school. i've shown it to the kids and the look on their faces says "i'll take my chances with the fire, thanks."

i used to do highrise window cleaning so it doesn't scare me in the slightest.

I have one in my classroom. There is a big swinging metal arm bolted to the floor near the window, and you are to connect the rope thingy to it so we can all decend to safety easily in case of a fire ...

Ya right.

The box with the rope in it -- the kids were playing with it and dragging it all around and one day I came to school to find it bolted to the ground. On the other side of the room from the window and swinging arm.

Doesn't really matter though, as the window that we are supposed to get out of only opens 4 inches due to the fact that a banner advertising the new shabu-shabu restaurant upstairs from us is tied to the window preventing it from opening.

So typically Korean.

I wouldn't be scared of the height. I would be more or less scared of the metal arm attached outside... Wonder if they are made for a waygookin or not? Have one in my appartment. i figure by the time i get it out sorted out hooked up and get myself steadied outsdie thew indow i would be dead from the fire. So i'm going to use the stairs..

I opened the window beside the sign today and saw that on the other end of the roof there is this pulley and rope system that you speak of. Now I understand.

What a strange emergency escape system.

I still think the wording on the sign could be better though. Not sure what I would change it to, however.

Did they have those at the World Trade Centre during 9/11. I remember people jumping out of the building from the fire. Seems every building could use a whole bunch of those just in case. Some sort of system. Not just one.

Emergency Rope

Question[/quote]

That certainly gives me a better picture than "Descending Life Line" did, that's for sure.

I like the parachute idea. Seems safer (and maybe simpler) than some rickety rope and pully system anyway. In an emergency in a high rise, I'd give the parachute a try before the descending life line. Seems better than jumping to your death, too.

Shouldn't every commercial airliner be required to carry enough parachutes for passengers and crew?

You know, I have always thought they should have a big ass parachute (or cluster of parachutes) for the whole darned airplane. Wouldn't have helped on 9-11 but could have saved many an airplane from disaster. I wonder if this is unfeasible or just too expensive or what?

I think they don't have parachutes for passengers and crew because the airliners fly too fast and too high... you'd freeze to death and suffocate on the way down.
