Back in October 2003 I went on a backpacking trip through South-East asia and up into China that lasted around three months. It was the best trip I've ever taken. I flew into Singapore from Japan and then went overland through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Tibet and then back to China(south-west) and finally flew back to Europe from Hong Kong exhausted, skinny as a rake, somewhat broke but truly amazed and enlightened at what I had seen and experienced.
I stopped off along the way to see some of the more famous places such as Melaka, Penang Island, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Angkor Wat, Hoi An, Hanoi, Lijiang, Lhasa, Shigatse etc...I travelled around by bus, never once taking a train or plane except for when I flew into Tibet from Chengdu. I made 14-hour bus trips and overnight bus trips but never encountered any problems or got sick, and all this without any travel insurance. Looking back I must have been mad but it was worth every second and every Yen, Dollar, Pound and Euro
Good Luck! |
