I am interested in marrying my gf in Korea. She is not the same nationality as me and is not currently in Korea.
From my side, I was told we just register with my embassy and local council.
However, I wonder what else we must do.
Can she simply come here as a tourist and just marry? as long as we register with my embassy and local council?
I couldn't find such info in this forum.
Any information would certainly be apreciated. |

My husband and I got married in Seoul--I'm Canadian and he's American. You each need to go to your respective embassies and swear out a notarized document (certificate of elegibility of marriage) that says neither of you are still married to anyone else.
If either of you are divorced or widowed you need to bring the paperwork along that proves that. There are some fees to be paid at your embassies for this, call ahead to find out how much.
Then, you bring the certificate of eligibility of marriage to your local Korean "town hall" Gu office, fill out some forms, pay 10,000W and you're married! They may even dress both of you up in Korean hanbok and take a polaroid for free They do this at the Jogno-Gu office in Seoul.
Then you bring the Korean form(s) saying you're married back to your respective embassies, register the marriage with them, and get a certificate of marriage from them as well (in English).
Good luck to you both! |

Wow, great info.
Also, is any special visa needed?
Or simply come as a tourist?
Is a passport enough for going to embassies? |

Doesn't the partner get a spousal visa? As long as one has a valid work visa, the spouse can also reside in Korea during the same time legally. |

Your girlfriend doesn't need any special visa to get married in Korea. Tourist visa is fine as long as you get married within the time frame allowed on that tourist visa (the length of which depends on the country she's from). Canadians automatically get 6 months.
You will both definetly need to bring your passports to the embassies with you, possibly birth certificates or notarized copies of them, but please do call ahead to your respective embassies to find out exactly which documents you need--it could vary from embassy to embassy.
Embassy telephone numbers can be found on this General Forum sticky:
