I don't get it.

I read on CNet that so many Mac laptop owners rate their machines so highly. But when I look at them in the stores, I notice that the screens are as dark as when I have my non-Mac laptop on almost the darkest power-saver setting. How can Mac people not notice this, and find fault with it?

Are they blind, or just obessed with patting themselves on the back for being different?

I have a Mac laptop. The screen isn't dark at all, and I'm hyper-sensitive about things like that. I think I had to set it to be brighter in some options somewhere, though. Maybe in stores they haven't done that.

A lot of Mac users are just anti-microsoft and just as evangalistic and annoying as the bible thumpers you see on the subway here.

It's just a freakin' computer. Get over it.

What I've noticed is that many display models will have some of the darker (b&w photos, typically) wallpapers that come with Mac OX 10.whatever already set. Beyond that, though -- and also a few laptops where they'd minimised the icons for some reason, which also tends to "darken" the screen that has an already-dark wallpaper -- I can't say I've really seen this problem.

I'm (now) probably the most annoying type of Mac user in this respect, because although I use both systems, I'm not a convert of either religion. I don't rave about Apple products, which annoys some of the Microsoft-basher Mac-heads, and I also don't trash Microsoft (beyond what even dedicated Windows users themselves do) either, thereby denying the die-hard Apple-bashers their bit of fun.

(I will say I'm loving the Mac mini, though.)

Yeah. Then again, I know a lot of Windows users who are just as rabidly anti-Mac as the Mac evangelists. It goes both ways.

... which just goes to prove my point. Apple are taking a free operating system, repackaging it and then charging you money, not that there is anything wrong with that in principle - as long as your willing to pay cash for something which is essentially freeBSD based. I'm not saying either that OSX is a bad OS - I've heard it's quite good. But in a debate between windows or OSX ... I'd have to say neither of them compare to linux in the long run IMO.

Remeber UNIX does not equal Linux ... they're similar but there are some important differences - NPTL, more hardware and filesystem support for linux to name just a few (and obviously the fact that they run off completely different kernels).

I elieve Superhero and The Beaver have a love affair with both the Mac and laptops. That being so it is a double infatuation. I am sure they can tell you why.

Both Macs and laptops suck.

Laptops because they're expensive and gutless (portability is the only thing they have going for them).

Macs because of the cult following.

But I can use Photoshop, Premiere, InDesign, Dreamweaver, the entire MSOffice suite, two or three P2Ps while watching a video on one of the other monitors. Although I've never tried it, I'd imagine I could also render video at the same time. I don't care what laptop you have, it would start gasping and crying after Dreamweaver (and likely far before).

Additionally, I can update and upgrade hardware a whole ton more easily and cheaply and even though I have four drives in the computer (not counting the external because you can do with your computer equivalent of a purple-eared poodle) and half a terrabyte of hardrive space, I have room to slot in four more drives as well as four empty slots for RAM should I decide to go above my present 2 gigs.

I'll say again, although computer-light users never get it, all you have with a laptop is vanilla portability.

But I don't want to do any of that. I want my computer for email, surfing, chatting, World of Warcraft, music/movies, and an occasional bit of typing. Thus my laptop suits me just fine, especially since I can take it to my boyfriend's house with me on weekends and still have my own Internet instead of us having to share a computer. I don't think you can fairly say either laptops or desktops suck; they just have different purposes. A desktop would be inconvenient and unnecessary for me whereas a laptop would have limited usefulness for you.

You have a good point about the upgradability (sp?). The other advantages outweighed that for me.

And why does having a cult following make Macs suck? Maybe the cult following sucks, but that doesn't affect the quality (or lack thereof, if that's your opinion) of the computers.

I agree with you in theory, but I moved a real computer once and that was like moving a drum kit. Although that was back in the day of big monitors. If I were stable I would have a regular computer but as it is now I need to be able to move a lot. Pity. My laptop is very kind though.
