any way to get on the base? i hear they got loads of stuff out there. some1 also told me that you could go to the chamber of commerce, pay like a $20 fee, and get a card that could let you on the base to do shopping.
i mean, i could just make friends with some GI, but haven't gotten around to meeting many. if any1's got any suggestions, that'd be sweet. |

I think the AmCham membership is around 2,000 USD a year.
Even if you get on base, without a military/government ration card, you cannot shop in the PX. |

|

If you want American foods and goods, get a Costco membership. They have one in Seoul "Yangjae" (or something like that). I shop at the one here in Daegu (where I work). Go to Costo.com for maps of the locations.
It will cost you 35,000 for a year's membership (10,000 of that refunded to you in the form of a gift certificate). You'll be glad you did this when you see the variety of foods avaliable. The stuff is in bulk, but who cares? The prices are reasonible and it's much less of a hassle to shop here than to rely on some G.I. getting you stuff off the base. The only downside is that if you gat excited like me and buy lots of stuff, you'll either have to kill yourself hauling it onto public transit or take a taxi. The advice here is to not go overboard on your shopping here.
Have fun! |

There are three in Seoul, one in Deajeon and one in Daegu. There were a couple of threads not long ago detailing location & other good information:

I know there's another one, but I can't find it right now.
As wonderful as Costco is, though, there are some items that can only be gotten from black/grey market shops or from a military friend. |

Witty comebacks aside, you're joking right? Pretty sure it's American, anyway, though a little archaic, along with "straight dope" or "low-down." |

Costco = frozen mangoes and blueberries = happy pet lover
They have NOTHING else I'm interested in. Variety? Yeah, if you like a whole lot of same.
Now the INTERNET has variety. |

I'm familiar with "low-down", but "straight-dope" is from the 50's isn't it?? |

Well, with a friend you can, right? You don't need a ration card for the PX on an American base in the US. |

| Even if you are with a friend you cannot shop at the PX. In fact, the GIs are only allowed to buy around 350$ worth of stuff per month. It is to reduce the amount of black market goods. I have never heard of Koreans being able to buy stuff on American bases. If it was possible everyone would be doing it because gasoline is sold on bases for one third of the Korean price. |

Wow, it sure must suck to be posted in Korea. Is this true in all overseas posts? What about in Iraq, where there aren't too many options to the PX? Do they have such limits there? (I know, I know, no one's really posted to Iraq...) |
