My wife and I are living in a small town, she is teaching and I am not. The main reason for this is that I do not have the 'required' education (meaning I do not have a Bachelor's degree). And everybody who I know here knows that fact. Recently, however, the director at my wife's hagwon approached me with an offer to work part time (two days a week) at (I'm assuming) another hagwon in town. I don't know what school yet, or what kind of wages. What I need from you fine folks is advice on the LEGALITY of this subject. I know it probably is strictly forbidden, but is there some loophole or something that I don't know about? Is this just some hagwon looking for a cheap teacher? Anybody?

Well, yes and no. I mean, I realize that it's probably illegal for me to do so, however, I would like to mention that this is a Christian school, and the people who my wife works with have been very professional and kind (the former apparently being rare, after reading this board), and I would like to think that the director wouldn't like to get me deported. So I just wanted to check on here for something I didn't know about.

Do what you want...but remember that it is illegal and it is hard to force them to pay. Don't let him pay you every month. Get paid every two weeks with no holding time because you don't want to be out a month of money.
The real problem is that everyone knows you are illegal now and other schools will report your school to kill it. This happens alot, so you are possibly already screwed out of a job. Here is a tip...IF YOU HAVE A SECRET LIKE NO DEGREE, DON'T TELL PEOPLE". What I mean is that the other english teachers will rat you out to the owners. Trust me, it happens a lot.

*** I might rat you out for the reward. Immigration will give a reward to people who report an illegal teacher. ----Do you see what I mean?

Ditto bellum.

You don't have a bachelor's degree so you don't meet the minimum requirements for a work visa. Also, you don't meet the requirements from the education board.

Illegal any way you slice it. It doesn't matter that the school is Christian and that you believe the people your wife works for wouldn't do anything to get you deported. That doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't end up turning you in in a heartbeat.

It's your choice but my advice is don't do it.

Alright, well first, thanks for your input bellum, but I wouldn't call it a "secret", because I didn't come here to teach in the first place. Second of all, you sound just a LITTLE pompous, and that I don't appreciate. Thirdly, all I wanted to know is if there was something I was not aware of that would make this venture legal. Now that I know there isn't (as far as I know), I won't be making said venture. But again, thanks for the advice!

Just look for some nice quiet private teaching in people's houses.... and for God's sake don't tell anyone. Remember that people prepay for tutoring (usually a month).

Yes. And really don't tell anyone, Christian or non-Christian unless you've known them for awhile and you really trust them. Also, be leery of taxi drivers, security guards, and neighbours who may want to get you deported...whether they get a cash reward or not. Don't give your real name, address, height, or nationality...use Canada if you're from America and vice-versa, or if you're from the U.K. or one of the Commonwealth nations other than Canada, use Canada or America(because, as you know, the North American accented English is standard and highly desired). Wear a disguise and don't carry too many English teaching materials in you bag. Most importantly, don't be too paranoid, but be very careful! Wink

On one of the web-sites there's even a "Report of Offender" tab that people can click on:

http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/ENG/index.do (and this is the English site)

Seriously though, be careful. bellum99's advice is sound. Outside of Seoul, you should accept no lower than 30,000won per hour for one student for private tutoring. One other thing. If you really trust the owners at your wife's school and you can also trust the other school's director, you may want to try it temporarily...just don't tell anyone where you live that you've accepted it and be wary of immigration officials who may make a visit at times.

There MAY be a loop hole for students. I'm not sure, but you might want to check out that angle.

You won't be making any money doing privates.

Privates are illegal.
