Hi there,
We're heading up to Seoul this weekend and will be free to explore on Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday morning.
Being one important present short of a christmas list, I'd like to spend at least some of that time in or around the markets at Dondaemun.
From what I can find online, the place sounds like a labrinth in which one could spend a week wandering around, let alone a single evening/moring.
Does anyone know the area well enough as offer advice on a short trip there? When to go, where to go, where not to go, what directions to give the taxi driver. I realize there are lots of variables that might affect where I go, but essentially, I'm a guy who wants to get a sense of the place and buy a gift for his girfriend.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Dennis |

Personally, I dislike Dongdaemun and I'd rather go to Namdaemun or some outlet area as they are much more relaxed, but that might just be me. I think Dongdaemun appeals mostly to kids and people who are very deep into the korean mainstream shopping hysteria.
Anyway, to your questions. I dont know when the markets close (fiveish?) but the shopping centers are open until late at night (no idea when they close) and are crowded with youngsters. If you want the pulse, thats the time to go. Otherwise, its much more habitable in the daytime. But in the day time the storekeepers are usually bored so if you are whitey be prepared that they expect you to talk to every one of them (no matter they are the fourtieth person in one hour who wants to do a friendly sales pitch) or you are rude yangnom. |

just tell the taxi driver dongdaemun or namdaemun and they will take you there. both are crowded and impossibly unorganized. i went there more to look at crowds and eat and drink than actually shop for specific stuff. COEX mall in Kangnam might be better for that. |

Thanks for the tips, they're much appreciated.
On a slightly different note, what's a yangnom? |

Originally derived from "yankee" and meaning something like "american bastard" though now used as a racist slur against whiteys in general. |

Dongdaemoon is an interesting place to explore. If you can find the pet section, walk one block further and cross the street, and you'll find some interesting little stores that sell suspect-looking electronics and plenty of sex toys and porn. |
