just to add to the ongoing discussions about the new visa regs. and what effect they'll have on current employees and prospective employees. i know many discussions have come up because of the new rules, but i thought the following was a good indication of just how far it's gone.
it is an on dave's, freely viewable, for a university position. i have copied the relevant information. holy smoke, look what they're asking for.

1) Official Application form with attached photo (form is attached below)
2) A certified copy of all university diplomas authenticated by the Korean Consulate or The Korean Council for University Education.
3) Official University transcripts from each university attended.
All application materials should be sent to:
12. Only eligible candidates will be contacted for an interview.
13. The chosen applicant will be required to adhere to all of the new regulations outlined in
Korean immigration law for E-2 visa holders.
Mandatory documents include:
1) All original university diplomas. These will be returned to you after they have been authenticated.
2) Official sealed transcripts from your university.
3) University graduation certificate
-Certificate confirmed by Apostille or Korean Council for University Education should be attached**.
4) Criminal Background Record
-Issued directly from your local, regional, or federal police agency. Each home country has different application procedures. Each applicant should apply for this well in advance of hiring.
(No embassies or consulates issue criminal record checks at this time.)
5) Health Certificate
After receiving the E2 visa, the applicant must go to an approved government hospital, public health clinic, or general hospital and submit the report to the immigration office. After an applicant receives their alien registration card, the applicant must submit the Korean Health Medical Report within 3 months/ 90 days.
- Korean Medical Report Contents: a narcotic drug test, TBPE test, ����?�?οõ�(Cannabinoid) test, AIDS/ HIV test
Medical tests are to be paid for by the applicant.
14. If any discrepancies are found within your application, it will not be considered.
Only qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview.
** What is an Apostille?
An Apostille or postil is a seal applied by the Department of State to authenticate a document in a foreign country in order to assess the authenticity of an official signature. The Apostille is recognized as form of an international notary seal. An Apostille can be used if both countries (the country issuing the document and the country in which the document will be used) are part of the international "The Hague Apostille Convention".
***Medical Health Report
After entering Korea, applicants must submit themselves to a medical check at an approved govt. hospital public health clinic or general hospital.

quite incredible. but the thing i find most interesting is the fact that one univ. is asking for all that. at the applicant's own cost and time. sealed transcripts, original degree, CBC, medical, apostille etc etc.
my question is what if you're applying to more than one place? many people apply to 10-15 places.......how would you go about that? |

That's ridiculous. I don't understand why universities demand that applicants send all of the documents which would have to be submitted to immigration by the successful candidate anyway. It makes abolutely no sense. |

What's this? I know I don't have it with me in Korea, and I doubt that I could find it back home in my mom's house anywhere either. |

If they want you they'll look the other way with many of these things (except the documentation). |

yes i don't hesitate to believe that korean employers might overlook some things for the right candidate. however 'documentation' now seems to be everything officially required.
all the requirements seem ludicrous. what's more, that seems to be at the application stage, not even when you've got the job? how many people would do that for one job at the application stage, let alone 10-15, which is what most people applying for new jobs do.......?
upon closer inspection it does 'the chosen applicant......' so i guess the more rigorous requirements are for once you've got the job.
however, the fact still remains that most people will be applying to more than one job. thus do they need copious amounts of copies for most things? at their own cost? how many will do that i wonder? |

it looks like most uni's still just want the basics, initially: resume, copy of transcripts, original degree, etc.
if you're granted an interview, additional things may be required.
the health check is done after you are hired and as long as you don't have HIV or copious amounts of THC in your blood, you should be ok.
the criminal check is going to be the royal pain in the arse for those who aren't planning to go home or don't have a copy already.
two questions: how recent does the criminal check have to be?
can you get them online from abroad? |
