Anyone been to Pattaya? How good/bad is it? Can anyone recommend a good hotel? I might be spending 2/3 days there over the new year since most other islands are already fully booked Shocked

The Cottage is a good hotel. 2 swimming pools, right across from Big C.

750 baht a night. Nice little bungalo's, quiet and good security. Friendly and helpful staff(it helps if you drop off a nice tip when you check in..tip box at front desk)

Close to lots of beer bars and the beach.

Big C is the big mall in Pattaya...movie theater, grocery store, lost of shops, internet cafe, lots of restaurants....not a bad place to kill some time when its raining Wink

I was there a few years ago. Its fame (or notoreity) is justified. Hotels are everywhere, truly. You can get a little map when you arrive, or in BKK. A decent enough hotel could be had at 500 baht a night. Though Grotto's suggestion with the swimming pool sounds good too. English is spoken everywhere: a major tourist town. Lots of good shopping. Bought some Levi's jeans for about 400 baht (10 bucks).

Overall, It's an interesting place for a few days.

PS.. would you mind if I travelled in your suitcase?

Lots of great places to do scuba or snorkling...day trips are cheap and plentiful as well

In the morning you can go parasailing,....just haggle a fair bit with the operators as they jack the price up at the sight of a foriegner Wink

I stayed in the House Hotel. Ask for a room in the newer wing. You get a discount if you book for a longer length of time.

A little more pricey, but ask them for one of the newer rooms. It is right down in it. Have lunch at the Pig & Whistle down the street.

Never, never, never book a hotel room at the airport. Walk right past the taxi whores working as you leave the inside of the airport. Get a taxi at the stand outside. Keep track of who you pay and how much. I absolutely hate taxis in Thailand with a passion. They WILL try to cheat you.

Thanks for the info guys. Will try to check out the Big C and hopefully will find a nice hotel somewhere. What kind of day trips do you recommend? What can I actually see/do in Pattaya apart from the usual beach stuff?

Lots of day trips....ruby and opal mine(about an hour away by bus)...temples....sanctuary of truth was okay...crocodile farm and million year old trees.....scuba(if you dont scuba there are places that send you down with a bell helmet on and you get to experience some underwater fun)......Jomtien beaches are a bit nicer.....the Ripleys believe it or not center is cool......Stay away from Planet Holleywood(12$ for a cheeseburger).....lots of shops to peruse and hone your haggle/barter skills.

I've stayed at the High Five, on Soi 8 and the Second Road, several times. Swimming pool on the roof with a view of the beach. Nice. Its mid-ranged, and good value for the money. Anywhere from 500 to 800 baht depending on the season. Its on the Second Road, so all jeepneys will drop you off right in front of the hotel as they make their loop. About a 10 minute walk to the mall.

Be sure to get a massage every day.
Around 200-300 baht (5-7 bucks), legit, and very relaxed. Find one you like and go everyday.

I am in Pattaya now. The weather is beautiful.

The beaches are not so nice here-not like Phuket or Samui..very narrow and commercial.

Diving is ok for deep wreck dives. I have seen much better reefs in Samui and I know Phuket is better yet. I would recommend Mermaids as a Dive school

There are many venues here: a tiger farm, snakes farm, crocodiles, elephants rides, bungee, golf, flight school, skydiving, and lots more

Excellent restuarants and very cheap prices

Some great tailors--much much better than Itaewan and cheaper

Medical stuff is cheap

I ove it here

What is Great about Korea???? It is only 5 hours from Thailand!

Anyone got any links to those hotels so I can book something on-line?

The Lek hotel serves a great buffet for about 120 baht...excellent selection and flavour.
