I was hunting for audio books to download to help me go to sleep. Stumbled across a series of lectures called "The History of the English Language."

This is one of the most fascinating things I've listened to in years. And being English teachers, this stuff is so valuable. This guy explains why we have all these different ways of spelling words, that how a word is spelled is a living fossil. He also traces the origins of English from the Indo-European languages to the influence of African-Americans.

Really, a lot of the stuff we find amusing and frustrating about how Koreans pronounce English is part of the historical process that has shaped English over centuries.

Do a search for a bit torrent for "Seth Lerer," and you find it.
