Hello, newbie here *waves*
I did a search and I didn't find any topic like this so if there is i'm sorry ahead of time.

Ok so, I got my TESL from Oxford seminars and one of the benefits is I get a nice Career counselor for 6 months who sends my information out to all his buddies in the countries I ask for.
So long story short I get this call from a Lady who is the recruiter for the Centre of Education and Training international. The entire interview was like "do you still want to work in south korea?" "yes" "ok so i'll send you a contract...."

Now I was little like O_o at first but now I think they're legit. I mean i've called them several times and asked tons of questions. They never asked for my original diploma or anything. I think they've done everything just fine.
I have these two job offers with them. 1) is an ALT position at GYEONGGI SCHOOLS. I think it's in icheon. Tell how much I don't know about Korea I thought icheon was the school and Gyeonggi the place but is it the other way around? I know I would be going to an elementary school and that's it. Anbyways the contract was in korean and english so I had someone I trust who is fluent in Korean check it over and made sure everything that was in Korean was also in English so hidden terms. It checks out.

The second contract is at an English Town in Seongnam. Last I heard there were two spots left so I might not get this one really. The point is I didn't have to interview for either of these and so my mom is all arguing against me going and swearing up and down this school is bogus and i'm going to be sold into sex slavery and they'll never see me again. Ok maybe not convinced but she warned me this may happen. I mean I kow this. But at the same time i'm not as scared as she is. I'm not afraid to jump into an unknown situation just because I may get hurt wheras she is and at the same time she tried to pull me from situations because EVERYTHING didn't check out and i'm like just because not every little last detail makes sense to you doesn't mean you shouldn't do something you can miss out. I mean if something i supposed to happen to you it's supposed to happen.

ok rant aside my mom is not entirely wrong. Her heart is in the right place. She just doesn't realize i'm not an idoit I've been a member of Dave's ESL cafe ever since I started getting interviews with schools in Japan and i've been researching every school that contacts me. I have already made up my mind to sign the contract but I wanted to ask if anyone had any information about the Centre for Education and Training, International before I do sign with these people. I find it a little hard to find information on them but I think it's mroe because more than one company has that name. Here's the Address
CET - Centre for Education and Training, International100 Elm Drive West, Room 108Mississauga, ON L5L 2A6Phone: (905) 279-0024 Fax: (905) 270-6479
My mom is always like this really. I should remind her because we had a talk before and she was like she doesn't do things like this anymore, lol. Her problem is when I want to do something that is outside her relm of normal she automatically comes up with a list of reasons why I shouldn't do it. It all adds up to me being used and forced into some horrible situation. And she always ends it by reminding me that i'm some naive babe that just says yes to everything without asking questions. It's highly insulting really. I wish she would realize that if I said "yes" to something I have already done some sort of looking into. I mean take this. I already asked the company quiestions. Asked the career counselor at oxofrd seminars. Had more than two people look over the contract. The only thing I couldn't do was come here and ask questions. I kept getting errors up until now. I pray I don't get an error when I press "create topic".

Ok i'm going to stop talking because feel very insulted right now and i'll be ranting for days. [/i]

If there is a question anywhere in there for someone to answer, I missed it.

Hi Anne:

I say you go for the contract in Seognam (for selfish reasons really since I have signed up to teach there). I also took the course with Oxford and was surprised by how lax the interview was: I think basically anyone who takes the oxford course is guranteed a place.

With respect to CET's reputation: I asked the recruiter from Oxford and she said they have had positive feedback from other graduates who have gone through CET. I noticed that its affliated with the Peel Board of Education so I think that is a good sign that it is in fact legitimate. I am not so worried about the CET being legitimate as I am nervous that the English town will be not what I expected. It makes me nervous that since it is a brand new school we can't talk to any other teachers.

With respect to the contract: I have also had some people look over the contract and they couldn't really find anything wrong with it. In fact, I think the contact looks pretty good. The only thing that kind of sucks is the whole sharing a room thing. Though Elaine (from CET) says that this is only temporary -but it doesn't say anything about it being temp in the contract, should I be worried about having to share my room for a year?

Anyways, I can understand you being apprehensive, I, myself, am a little nervous about moving but I think we will be okay. If you have any specific questions about the contract message me back and I'll try and help you as much as I can. Good luck with your decision.

Regards,

Shikha
