Former Minnesota Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy, whose insurgent campaign toppled a sitting president in 1968 and forced the Democratic Party to take seriously his message against the Vietnam War, died Saturday. He was 89.

That is sad news. He was a good man. |

I vaguely remember that he had a lot of "hippy-type" supporters who volunteered to canvas voters on his behalf, but their appearance had a negative effect on middle-classers. So, many of them were actually inspired to sacrifice their shaggy looks and "Be Clean For Gene". |

Me too, gypsyfish. I couldn't vote him in '68 but I did in '72, four years too late.
I campaigned for him in South Dakota and Nebraska (I was going to school in Colorado), but I didn't have to cut my hair. It wasn't that long yet.
I was in Rapid City campaigning for him and all 6 of us went to an Indian dance at the local gym. During the break we decided we'd seen enough and left. An aide to Senator McGovern chased us down because the senator wanted to say 'hi' to us. He was in town to campaign for Bobby. We waited on the street corner till he finished his speech. He was nice enough, but being 18 and knowing far more than I do now, I told him I thought he and Bobby were moral midgets for waiting for Gene to legitimize an anti-war candidacy. He took it with a great deal more aplomb than I would have, had the situation been reversed.
I met McCarthy down in Alliance (or was it Scott's Bluff?) but didn't get to speak to him. But I did notice that his hand was cold. |
