There is a new (relatively) artificial sweetner that I really like. It's brand name is Splenda. It's generic name is sucralose. It's derived through doing something to real sugar in a laboratory.

Do they have this in Korea or should I put a few hundred packets in my suitcase when I come?

I wonder about the Costco in Seoul. I realize, of course, that it will be a lot different than the Costcos in Seattle. My membership expired recently and I decided to renew it because I knew there was a Costco in Seoul.

At the Costco in Seattle, I could buy a big box that would last for many months. Of course, I would rather use the precious space for something else if it is obtainable in Seoul anyway.

I'll scout next time I go, probably in the next two weeks. I've definitely seen it at black market shops, but not giant boxes.

If I'm remembering right, Splenda is amazingly light for the size of the box, right? What you might consider doing is getting your school's mailing addy, and sending yourself a care package before you leave.

Thanks,
Yes, it is.
Good idea. If it isn't available there, I'll do that.

They aren't comfortable with Splenda's advertising, feeling they claim to be just like sugar, but aren't. Splenda people insist that it's because Splenda tastes so much like sugar, and the sugar companies are nervous. I'd tend to agree they sugar companies must be nervous, although I've never tasted Splenda. We all know what sugar tastes like, and what it doesn't. If some company comes out with a healthier alternative that tastes just like it, then the sugar companies have some reason to worry. Splenda is made partly from sugar anyway.

Saw a TV report on it last month... can't remember if it was NBC news or where exactly.

Stevia is a natural, organic sweetener derived from some kind of South American chrysanthemum. Or maybe it's some other flower, I don't know. In any case, has anyone seen it over there? I ask rhetorically, as I'm bringing a huge stockpile of the stuff with me. It's available in packets and little bottles. And it's great -- no scary chemicals to mess up your insides.

A couple of years back, I saw some soft drinks here that were sweetened with stevia, but nothing lately. With the current "well-bing" fad/trend, it would not surprise me to see stevia reappear.

Take them with you.
They will take up no added space. Just dont take the box. Dump them out. They will nicely fit in between what ever is in the suitcase, clothes, video tapes.

I bring back sweet and low all the time. You can find it in Namdemun. but it is tripple the price.

Remember, western foodsnare generally not so cheap here.

Costco does not have artificial sweeteners. Or if they do I haven't found them.

A small precautionary note, since no one has brought this up yet. Splenda, as the OP notes, is a new product, & it was rushed to market without research into longterm effects. Aspartame likewise found a big market niche until its potential dangers were discovered.

There are real questions about the safety of sucralose. Heres one toxicity analysis: http://www.holisticmed.com/splenda/

A packet of sugar carries its own dangers, but at least the distributors arent required to print health warnings on it. If youre diabetic, the tradeoff might have some value. But if youre simply too heavy, do you really have to sweeten your coffee? Do you need that slab of something sweet to finish your meal?

Your call, your health.

Schwa, very good point. We sweeten our food way too much.

But schwa, have you ever needed to loose weight? It is hard for some of us.

I lost 25 pounds, and it took 6 months. (actually it took 30 years, but lets not go there...) I still have about 30 more pounds to go, and I plan on taking 6 months to do it.

I used to use one pkt of sweet and low per cup of coffee, 3 cups a day. Now I have one cup of coffee, no sweetener, and lots of tea and water.

The trick is to use just a bit less each time, till u are off the stuff. But if you need somethig, the way to go is dump it in your luggage, not in the box.
