Professors face charges on fund embezzlement
... six professors have been indicted on embezzlement charges, including two engineering professors at Seoul National University indicted in July. Prosecutors said the Yonsei professor, who was responsible for the management of research funds, allegedly diverted 50 million won ($48,300) of his research assistants' wages from January 2001 to March 2004, to his own account, and embezzled 250 million won by fabricating invoices for equipment. The professor from Kwangwoon University, in a similar position, also allegedly diverted 230 million won from March 2000 to October 2002 from his research assistants' wages for his own use. The prosecution added, "The professor used 600 million won from research funds in the 1990s to invest in real estate, but the statute of limitations has already expired on that case." The two professors from Seoul National University, charged with embezzling research funds worth 270 million won and 140 million won, respectively, were not detained, prosecutors said, as they had used the money to provide scholarships for their students.

Stop corruption in academia
The methods used to misuse funds are diverse. The funds most commonly exploited are those paid to graduate students for their labor. Professors use various excuses to withhold the money from them,...

Students Cite Professors for Negligence
.... "SNU has some professors who come to school only once a week".... According to the survey, students said that almost all of their classes have been canceled at least once, and.... no make-up classes.... Moreover, of the SNU professors, more than 200 are involved in venture businesses, 50 of whom are chief directors. A total of 50 professors are also working as outside directors of companies. In addition, 40 professors have stayed in foreign countries longer than the foreign travel regulations of school allow them to during the semester (20 days).
