Catholic crackpots : Really, you have to wonder at what the church produces these days.

Quote:
Gonzalez, a former firefighter in the town of Aguada, has told his followers that he became a manifestation of John Paul when the pope died in April and that Pope Benedict XVI is the "antichrist," according to the order, which priests in the diocese read to their congregations Sunday.

Quote:
The bishop also alleged that another sect leader, Gladys Miranda, claims she is the Virgin Mary, and that followers of the group make it hard for parishioners to receive communion by lying face-down in the aisle.

I almost fell off my chair laughing ... I love this stuff.

There is something to be said for having the Inquisition around to enforce orthodoxy. Not a lot, but something.

I'm not sure if believing oneself to be the Virgin Mary is any more ridiculous than believing that a person such as Mary the Virgin Mother existed in the first place.

You can pretty much play this game with any religion. Dalai Lama the incarnation of the bodhisattva? Ah, those Buddhist crackpots! Joseph Smith got his tablets from an angel in New York? Oh, those nutty Mormons! And so on and so forth.
