There is a thread on here somewhere where several posters claim that since they are here for the money, then everyone else is, too.

I want to clear this up.

IF (a BIG if) you had your druthers, where would you be now?

a) If I had my druthers, I would be back home pursuing a career in my college major.

b) If I had my druthers, I would be back home pursuing a career in some other field not my college major.

c) If I had my druthers, I would be teaching ESL in some other country (preferably warmer than this one in December).

d) If I had my druthers, I would be here in Korea but teaching in a different job.

e) Other druthers

If I had my druthers, I would still be here in Korea but teaching adults.

I taught high school for a long time. After 11 years, I thought I would be ready to deal with adolescent angst and moodiness. I found out in the first 50 minutes that I was not. Korean and American teenagers are the same. The virtues are the same (and I get a kick out of those) and the failings are the same (and I have had my life-time fill of those).

More power to those who want to teach high school (and a Nobel Prize to those who want to teach Middle School!) but I have done my bit.

Money is not the issue. I love living here. But I do wish I had a different job. If I could hand-pick the interesting students who want to learn, then I might reconsider. But that will never happen.

Out of the choices you offered, none. Along the same lines of the choices you offered, doing the job I'm doing now in the place I'm doing it (although more money, more holidays, and better classrooms would be nice no matter what a person's present conditions are).

If I flat out had my druthers I'd be independently wealthy and studying languages here and there while travelling around.

Mr. beaver,

We'll put you down as an 'e'...'other'. I was aiming to keep this in the realm of reality. I mean, if I had my druthers as you seem to define them, I'd rather be hung like a stallion and be richer than Croesus.

(I'm assuming that being hung like a horse is not quite as good as being hung like a stallion.) Mayhap the Sex in the City episode where Samantha meets her 'match' is too much in my head. I can't seem to get billybrobby's 38 hyphens out of my mind.

If I had my druthers, I'd have millions of dollars and never have to work again.

Since I don't have a million dollars, I'm just glad I'm not the OP who's all concerned about what he's concerned about.

My druthers would be same type of work, same money, same conditions, but in Thailand, Bali, or Malaysia, or Italy.

I have to speak Korean better before I can get my druthers properly together. For now I have to choose between teaching adults (and start in January) or at a high school (and start in March).

If I had my druthers, I'd be a university professor with a name for myself and/or some kind of special expertise that means I could find work in lots of different parts of the world. I'd get rich by doing consulting on the side, and starting a bunch of ancillary businesses, while still teaching as my primary job. I'd live for, oh lets say, 5 years in Hong Kong, 5 years in France, 5 years in maybe Mexico or Brasil, a few years in India, and so on, with a beautiful wife and cute children (who never age beyond Cool in each country.
