Any body know if I can wear sandals AND socks in Thai/Bangkok temples?? (That's OK in Korea).

Has anyone been to a Bangkok Temple lately wearing sandals and socks?

I don't want to carry a pair of closed toe shoes around just to visit temples. But Lonely Planet sais you must have closed toe shoes.

In my experiences, the shoes had to be off when entering the temples. You just left them on a shoe rack...or throw them in your bag, b/c I have heard that there are thefts.

The only thing they wanted were sleeved shirts and no shorts.

Went through several temples wearing tshirts and sandles and wasnt once stopped. Travelled with a Thai friend who was dressed the same and so were most of the people in the temple...

Having lived in Thailand for several years, I cannot remember ever entering a wat (and I have visited many over the years) where I was not expected to remove my shoes. This includes sandals.

I also do not remember ever seeing a Thai wearing shoes inside a wat.

It is considered very disrespectful.

thanks everyone. I wasn't going to wear shoes/sandals INSIDE the temple. I just wanted to know if I could get into the temple (grounds) in sandals and socks. Have a good christmas.
