Oh crap, I better run anti-virus.

Oh wait, what am I thinking, I'm on a Mac.

Cool

Sorry, I just can't help but giggle at a virus scare. Silly rabbit, viruses are for Windows.

It's not as simple as a programmer just deciding one day to code a virus for a Mac. A Mac is tougher, sans virus protection, than any Windows PC with protection. Infecting a Mac or hacking it is much more difficult. One day, sure, maybe. All a hacker needs is enough time, but I've certianly got a helluva head start on them.

... well the odds that you are running an SQL server are pretty low I'd imagine. I mean what do those things cost anyway ... around 5 or 6 grand ?

... the slammer virus was interesting when it hit a couple of months ago. It had the highest propogation rate seen on any virus so far, and also the highest infection rate. It was quite a work of art, if you could call it that.

... the attack vector it used was a gaping hole in the windows sql server that had been discovered some time beforehand but was never patched by MS until the proverbial s**t hit the fan.

No-one is ever going to run a mac server anything, so there's no problem there. The whole mac OSX system was put on the alert list by sans a while ago for it's numerous faults and trojan posibilities. The first time a whole operating system made the list. That hardly makes the mac the bastion that it's acolytes would like to think it is.

Good work. 'Cause, you know, anybody and their dog can have a Mac. Oh, you want a prize? Sorry, we don't have one for jackasses.

Back to the real point:
Is anyone here running SQL? Oh, and not just any SQL, either. The very specific varieties of MSSQL server 2000 or MSDE SQL that this virus targets.

Nope, didn't think so.

I had one version of MSDE SQL, but I never used it so i uninstalled it. Maybe a good thing.

Actually, I am running MSSQL in my office, but its not exposed to the 'outside'.

So I am sure I am safe.

There are Mac viruses. One of the reasons they don't spread as much is that there are fewer Macs to be infected, and fewer viruses to infect them. Virus writers are well aware of this, thus they aren't as inclined to write viruses for Macs. Think about it. What's more prestigious, infecting 20 000 Macs or 1 000 000 Windows based systems?
