Although I have browsed several other threads, I have not seen direct responses to my questions.
I have an M.A. in English. Although I am reasonably happy at my hogwon (paid on time, reasonable accomodations, decent kids, etc.), I do not currently intend to re-sign at the end of my contract.
Can anyone verify that there is a second "hiring period" around March for "unis"? How does one get into a "good" university position in Korea? What sort of references are they looking for? |

Although, that's a little picky. C'mon. Pickin' on someone because they used "although" twice.
Pick better ones than that. 
How about, "Although I'm a retard, I like picking on people that use 'although' twice in one post." |

There is a 2nd hiring perod for some unis but it's very ad hoc resulting from problems from their first round which are concluding over the next few weeks.
The problems I refer to are
a) a teacher who said he was coming back, decides not to for whatever reason
b) a teacher that has been newly hired gets a better offer somewhere else so tell them he's not coming.
c) a newly hired teacher coming from outside Korea just doesn't show up for whatever reason. This is why unis seldom hire someone who already isn't in country. Might be because some unis don't pay airfare to Korea or any visa expenses. But the salary in these schools is usually high enough to offset this, but then a lot of people may not have the 3 or 4 mil won necessary for the plane fare to Korea, visa run and living expenses thru to the 1st pay.
c) they get more students or classes than anticipated and need another teacher(this 1 is rare but it happened here once)
d)a teacher gets to the school and is informed he is on his own for the visa run expenses and balks at this (again uncommon but that has actually happened twice here). A cororollary of this 1 is that they haven't done the visa run yet and decide they don't want to work there and just leave
So for whatever reason, the uni is stuck. They find out about these things anywhere from a few weeks before classes start in early March to a few days after. At that point, they will send out emails to all those who came close in the interviews but chances are most of those people are settled in somewhere else. So then they start to panic and will literally take anyone with the necessary qualifications and this often includes someone who has just applied for a position or better yet, someone who just happened to be door knocking-timing is everything in this phase.
As far as a good uni-they look for s lot of experience and degrees but you'll be told what and how to teach your classes. I work in what is probably called a mid teir and the teachers set our own texts, lesson plans and exams-very independent environment but the students are not elite.
They look for references from your other teaching positions. The more experience you have the better and they will love your MA English.

Thank you to the person who answered my question seriously and did not focus on a minor grammar mistake made post-midnight ON a Friday IN Seoul... GET OVER IT "cruisemonkey"!
My contract does not finish until July, and I do need to finish it for financial reasons. My "master plan" is to try for a position starting in the fall...I'm not sure how feasable this is, but I'm willing to give it a go. |

End of July or beginning of July? Regardless, you can go to Japan and come back on a tourist visa after you've finished your contract. Maybe you can search around for a uni's summer camp, which will help you get your foot in the door. If not, just set up lots of interviews. Your master's in English will help. If you've only taught at the one hakwon in Korea(or elsewhere), make sure you get a glowing reference from them(scan it, keep the original). Some places ask for three letters of reference, so you might want to think about where else you can get some...maybe one from your advisor at uni and/or an okay(related) job or two you had back home. If you're in a real bind, try a combination of professional, academic, and personal. |

| Sookmyung Womens University was looking for new teachers to apply for a special program they have beginning next Fall. You might still be able to apply. It could be a great way to break into teaching at a university. |

Most fall positions will be trying to fill a position that someone left mid contract but it is doable-people leave after the first term is over in June for a variety of reasons. Again, timing is everything. |

I work at a top 5 university and there is very little control from the department in which we teach. We are told what book to use, but not what chapters or how to use it. Classes are curved and the only grading requirement is that 20% of the grade must come from written work - this can be a written exam, homework, or essay - your choice. |

I finish my contract July 4 officially (Independence Day!). I have only been here six months, but find the living conditions quite tolerable as I work on those student loans...though I do still seem to eat quite a bit of ramyon (and crow on occasion).
I will work on getting some of my "rusty" contacts and references together, cross my fingers, and start hunting in January... |
