Hey all,
Just when things are going fine, I have sent off all my docs to the school (E2 Institute in Changwon, haven't heard anything bad so far). I have just recieved an email from them asking whether I sent the original or a notarisation of my degree. I have sent a notarised (of course! Wouldn't let my original out of my hot hands) however they said there is a new law back in May that immigration must have the original AS WELL as this whole sealed transcripts shermuzzle. Has anyone actually heard this, or is the school misguided?
I have my airfare fully paid for and all (will be reimbursed the week I get there), now I'm very worried |

A notarised (by a Korean embassy or consulate) copy of your 'sheepskin' is acceptable; transcripts must be 'sealed'. |

Exactly, so what are they on about then?
Has ANYONE heard of this new rule supposedly back in May?? As I've said I've also sent along signed, sealed, delivered transcripts, so this is good enough |

Some hogwan owners of either stupidity or dubious ethics have been trying to tell people that their original degree is needed. It is not...as pointed out earlier a notorized copy by immigration, consulate or embassy is perfectly acceptable. Any claims to the contrary are wrong. |

I submitted my notarised when I started back in May. Now I've been informed that I have to submit my original b4 the end of december. If you're not already here bring your original with you. They won't keep it they'll just look at it and give it back. You will have to fill a form with contact details of your uni (phone, fax etc) so make sure you know these. |

What do you think will happen then after December? Surely they're not going to force everyone to send their original? Noone will teach there under that condition! I did say in an email to the school that if I have to go to immigration to phsyically show them the degree I will, but it ain't leaving my paws!
Don't worry, I'm still in Oz, and I will bring it just in case. |

There were a lot of teacher's caught in recent months with fake uni degrees. So it seems immigration weren't doing a proper job checking their qualifications out. As a result most teachers now have to produce their original copies b4 the end of dec. It's possible in your case that won't be necessary. but you're right, send notarised and if your school also wants your original tell them you'll bring that with you and don't let it out of your hands, not to the school and not to immigration. Show it to them only. |

Absolutely, it could be that hagwon owners/recruiters are quoting this new rule to get their hands on Precious--wich some will promptly keep, lose, or sell. A notarized-by-a-Korean-consulate uni degree is pretty hard for a school/recruiter/ to argue with. Even if you have to mail it to the closest K consulate to get copies notarized, it's worth it.
You can always show the original at immigration at a later date.
I got 4 copies done by the Korean consulate before I left Montreal. Small charge, low risk of future stupidity. |

So please, please, please, give me a straight answer: Is a notarized (by consulate) degree and transcript sufficient? |

I just went through teh job application process a few weeks ago and I tried everything I possibly could to get out of sending my original degree... but at the end of it all, I only had two options:
1. Go to the Embassy (or send my degree to them) in my country and have someone authorised to sign-off and witness that they saw my original degree.
2. Send my original degree to the school and they would send it straight back after they signed-off for it.
I ended up sending my degree to the school (express, overnight, registered post) and emailed the owner to get her to agree that if anythng happened to my degree she would pay for a replacement from my university.
Everything worked out fine (although i have never been so nervous in my life) and I now have my degree returned. IMO, it is ridiculous that an academic transcript, endorsed by the university, does not suffice. I even tried to explain to them that in Australia a degree is purely used for display purposes and that employers only require an academic transcript.... but they need to see both over there sorry guys I just hope your employers are as careful as mine with your degrees! |

It depends....in my case (and many others) it wasn't but it seems in some cases it is. It seems to vary depending on the whims of immigration and different hokwan owners. To cover all bets it seems best to have both with you if possible. |
