New National Team Coach Makes First Practice a Tense One
OCTOBER 08, 2005 07:57
by Won-Hong Lee, Jong-Koo Yang ([email protected] [email protected])
Now under a new head coach, the atmosphere surrounding the national football team is one of great tension.
On October 7, the date of the national teams first training session since Little General Dick Advocaats appointment as head coach, players arrived in cars driven by their family and friends because of the new head coachs strict order: Do not drive your own cars to training camp.
Most of the players who arrived followed the coachs order to arrive at the National Football Center (NJC) in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, by 1:00 p.m.
Choi Jin-cheol (Jeonbuk), Kim Young-gwang (Jeonnam) and Jo Won-hee (Suwon), arrived by taxi. Kim Young-gwang had to pay 25,000 won coming from Kimpo Airport and Jo Won-hee, coming from Seocho-gu, Seoul, paid 35,000 for the taxi. Lee Cheon-soo (Ulsan) came in his girlfriends car, and Park Ji-sung (Manchester United) and Park Chu-young (FC Seoul) came in their agents cars. Others were given rides by their fathers or friends. Certain rookies had to struggle with security guards who refused to let them in because their faces were not recognized.
Among the players, Lee Dong-gook (Pohang) and Chung Gyeong-ho (Gwangju), who arrived together at 11:25 a.m., were the earliest arrivers. Song Jong-gug (Suwon) was the only one to be late, arriving at 1:09 p.m.
Advocaat arrived at around 10:45 a.m. Assistant coach Pim Verbeek, who had been in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province the previous day to watch a friendly match between FC Seoul and Vissel Kobe, was the earliest member of the team to arrive, checking in at 10:25 a.m..
After a 30-minute lunch at 1:30 p.m., the players took a short break and started training at 4:45 p.m. They became tense, however, when the head coach did not reveal the details of their post-lunchtime schedule. This is a method that Guus Hiddink also used during the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup to keep the team in control. It is a method known to keep the players ready all the time by maintaining a state of tension.
Advocaat said nothing but Nice to meet you to the team when he faced them for the first time during lunch. The team finished their meals in silence and tension, with some players showing determination as they thought of the upcoming fight for starting lineup positions.
Summoned to the national football team in the last days of former head coach Johannes Bonfreres term, Jo Won-hee said, Our head coach seems to emphasize mental strength, with a rather flushed expression. |

This probably translates that they were asked for their id.
I did the job of Security once, a car pulled up and I approached it. As I didn't know them, I asked for their id and name as I had been told to do. I wrote it down and wished them a good day.
I found myself on night duty later that week, because they complained I hadn't joked with them when they arrived. We have to be entertainers all the time now, more so for the prima donna's. |

I think you should see about getting a Korean friend to share some of his General Issue K-team paraphenalia with you.
If your lucky he can even get you a spot in the post-loss protests/demonstrations of western referee bias and World Cup corruption.
Just make sure you stay up on which country you're supposed to be blaming this time.
Seriously though. If anyone knows a US or online TV station which plans to carry the Korean games I would be quite grateful. |

So, the new coach's name is *beep* Advocaat. Is that his real first name, or is it just a nick name? |

Impossible.
Croatia's victory has been pre-ordained by god.
She told me so in a dream |

England are going to meet Korea at some stage in the WC finals next year, I can just feel it in my water. The tarot cards also say so.
That would be an interesting match. |

It still is possible. Bigger upsets have happened.
The nationalist euphoria in the country would be very high. I think this would be a good development though. They would have something to really brag about.
Now if Korea were to be eliminated from the WC by a western team ie;England or god forbid the US, I would probably tatoo the Canadian flag to my forehead. |

the draw for the finals will be made in leipzig (thats in germany by the way) in december, when you'll hear who korea will play...
... which i too predict will be england....
and the name of the coach is d i c k advocaat (ask daves swear filter), formerly of Glasgow Rangers in Scotland
i intend to wear a 'be the reds' t shirt in england btw... more of a 'muscle' (middle aged spread) top nowadays though... |

Sorry for the late post, but just found out that the national squad takes on Iran tonight in Seoul. Should be interesting with most of the big Korean names suiting up for the match with a new coach. I'll have my eyes peeled. |

France, Serbia and Sweden have clinched their spots.
Draws for the Euro playoff round goes on Friday. Hard to imagine but Spain is in danger of not making it.
Also, Australia will once again be playing the 5th place team from South America (Uraguay) in a playoff. Best of luck to the them. It would be nice to finally see the Aussies make it to the World Cup. |

The Korea/Iraq game was sad. They were REALLY lucky with the first goal. They totally fell apart in the second half (ok, the ref left a lot to be desired, but!). I'm not a big fan of Ahn Jung Hwan, but he DID contribute BIG TIME to the second goal. Guess he's learned a few things about team play since the 2002 World Cup! |
