Well... maybe not for you! But it was for me.

So i was working for a public school.

I did a runner after only 4 months of a 1 year contact, no notice, just sodded off.

I owed flight and settling in money... all togther a fair bit.

This was 6 months ago.

Did the school contact me... yes... but only to ask why.

Did the recruiter contact? yes.. full of legal prison threats... loads of shouting and genrel unhappyness. However, haven't heard anything yet, and don't think i ever will.

Immigration... didn't care one bit that i was leaving Korea on a one way ticket with 8 months on my contract.

Did i ever get another job? yes - told the employer why i left my old job. They understood, no problems.

So... if are thinking of doing it... just go.. don't be scared. I know of 3 other people who did the same as me and also didn't have any problems.

Yes, you Tool, only "brave" people (as defined by you?) deserve a job.

The guy did what he should have done. I did it the 'brave' way and the arsehole of a Korean who owned my arse demanded 2mil for a letter of release. I paid it, but only cause a Uni came callin.

Get off ur high horse and go to Carl Cox.

Not sure that's deserved. I can think of a few situations where running would be the smart thing to do.

To the OP, isn't one forum soapbox enough for you?

peppermint,

I agree that some situations warrant a run.

From what the OP said...his does not...not by any stretch of the imagination.

Coward is not the right word...lame (other thread) was better.

Running is all too often used as a first resort by teachers who have no sense of responsability and who see nothing wrong with shafting anyone to avoid any consequences for their actions.

The OP seems to fit this bill to a tee.

Please spare me your pitiful attempts to be witty. Especially since, unless I'm misreading, you came back...

Well, he entered into a work contract and couldn't handle it for whatever reason. He could've put in his notice like a responsible employee and left on more than amicable terms. I do believe there are occassions where a quick leave might be in order (refusal of letter of release, blackmail etc) but there is no indication of any of this in the OP's original post. In fact, he came on here only to boast about it and maybe convince others to follow the example.

maybe not cowardly...definitely lame.

Hmmm. I don't care. I don't care why he left. I don't care why he's here talking about it. I don't care that back home he would be fired while begging to keep a job. I don't care where he's from. I don't care that he writes badly. I don't care who his boss was. In short.......

I DON"T CARE.

ps: Thanks for posting..bu bye.

sorry - i think i may have rubbed some of you up the wrong way!

my aim was not to condone my reasons for leaving, more to tell peopel who are being messed about to just do it.

sorry i allowed myself to get drwan into daft battles of who said what! it is the nature of boards like this i think!

so... yes.... all i am saying is.... if u want to leave... feel free to do so, no one will get you.(imho)

if you don't want to leave... and many of you ranting seem very happy... then lucky you.

korea does not suit everyone, and everyone is not suited to korea.

by the way... i have left korea! doubt i will be back there in a hurry

good luck to those who love it.

False assumptions!

Why do you assume that he "couldn't handle it"?

To be sure, he doesn't supply detail (as you point out), and so we're left guessing (at this point, until he fills us in anyway).

I tried giving notice on my first job here (a REAL nightmare, by the way), only to have my boss say, "Oh yeah? You're giving notice, are you? Do you realize that I could FIRE you right now, call Immigration, and have you DEPORTED IMMEDIATELY?" (A rough paraphrase, since I don't recall the exact words, but that is in essence what I was told, in just as blunt a manner.)

Sometimes running IS the best thing to do.

(In my case, I was lucky to be working for a chain, where the head-school management wasn't quite as whacked as my own franchise-holding principal. I went over his head; they sided with me, and the b****** was forced to sign a release letter. Not everyone has it so good, though.)

To put it all in perspective, Korea brings this problem ON ITSELF by setting up its immigration policy in such a way that foreigners living and working here are in effect indentured servants. We're really only a rung up the ladder from outright slavery--though I'll be the first to admit that it's generally a rather cushy sort of slavedom at 2 million won a month plus, provided of course that your boss isn't a SLAVEDRIVER, in which case, well . . .

It's time to run!

You should NEVER let anyone OWN you if you can possibly help it.

We abase ourselves badly enough as it is, just submitting to Korean immigration law. In fact, as I type this all out and think it all through, I can't help but wonder: Who in his right mind DOES sign on to an essentially nonwaivable contract, binding him- or herself to work for a complete stranger for an entire year, unless he or she is either a) masochistic, b) utterly unprincipled and without self-esteem, c) clueless, or maybe d) desperate. In my case it was initially d) desperate, though now that I've been here a few years and COULD take off I wanted to, I'm beginning to wonder more and more what keeps me.

If Korea adopted the Japanese approach to visa issuance, all this nonsense would be squared away tomorrow.

Though of course catching up with Japan is not a notion that will go down well here . . .
