Well, it's finally here. Today on the lunar calendar is , the first day of winter. Traditionally Koreans eat 팢, made from those red beans that everyone loves to find in their booby-trapped pastry and that 팢 (red beans on ice) that is everywhere in the summer. According to , this stuff will keep ghosts away during the winter. Personally, it isn't the ghosts that bother me, it's the two little boys who live downstairs. I'm hoping when they get their 'short-tongue surgery' that the doctor slips and clips their vocal cords. |

I'm on my 11th year in Korea and tonight was the first time I've been offered any of that Ghost Buster Soup stuff. The first time was at the end of the school day. One of the ladies in the lunchroom made some (the same one who made that killer soo-jung-kwa stuff on Monday). I passed on it. Then I went to Pelicana chicken for supper (there ain't a lot of choices where I live) and the ajumma offered me some. It's a very dull, reddish gray glop...and cold. Pretty high on the unappetizing scale, IMO. I passed again, but after another few shots of soju, I wish I hadn't. And if I see a ghost this winter, I'll REALLY wish I hadn't. |

It isn't that bad, especially if you like Korean juks. I missed it this year. For the last six years always had it at the school's canteen, but now with the new job, I don't get these seasonal treats like I used to. I hope I don't see any ghosts too! |
