Hi, I have just been told that I have to attend some workshop from Friday 16th- Saturday 17th of December for Native Teachers somewhere in Kyounggido Province. Anyone else heard about this? |

Yeah, that's likely. I think we are supposed to be sharing ideas. I don't like the fact that it takes up some of my weekend though. |

Not in my contract. More importantly, not during my specified working hours. I do not work on Saturdays.
It is funny, though. I think if they knew the ideas these teachers would be sharing after being told they MUST come in on a Saturday, they would be sorry they had the event.
Tell your boss that the teachers are looking forward to it, and plan to share ideas about a foreigner teachers union. |

Is it? That's interesting. I am not sure if I am part of GEPIK or not. |

You're at the high school right? GEPIK is only for elementary schools, and not even most of them. |

A friend on the Wisconsin programme has to go. I'm on EPIK and haven't heard anything. We usually get the same notices so fingers crossed I missed the draft. |

Today (Monday) I received an email from my colleage telling me that I must attend the Gyeongi-do seminar this coming weekend. I responded to my colleague's email as follows. I suggest that everyone respond in a like fashion.
"Dear xxxxx
I checked my contract. It states that I will "not work on Saturdays, Sundays and Korean national holidays." December 17th is a Saturday, so I'm afraid I can't attend the proposed seminar. I have plans for those days.
If the Board of Education had informed me about this workshop one
month ago, I might have considered attending. But it is unfair to tell people that they must attend a workshop in a distant city the next weekend. I already have prior engagements. I assume that many other teachers will also have prior engagements, and will be very unhappy about having to change them at such short notice. Please advise the Gyeongi Board of Education that their teachers should be given more notice about upcoming events.
Also, please advise them not to book such seminars on Saturdays or Sundays (as per our contracts).
Thanks, |

They just dropped the bomb on me. I suppose it will be allright; I don't know, has anyone ever been to one of these things? What should I expect. If it is just collaborating and meeting foreign teachers, I suppose it wouldn't be that bad. But if they expect us to do a lot of extra stuff like role playing, taking notes, etc. that would be worth fighting over. |
