i figured the korean food here would be like back home, but it isn't.

where'd all the meat go?

so i've decided to start cooking at home, but i don't wanna shell out major cash at the dept store for food. anybody know cheap places to pick up food or what the stores are called? any place that preferably sells cheap good MEAT. like fish, chicken, turkey, etc.

Not being able to find meat in Korea is like not being able to find your ass with both hands down your pants.

Ummm...I think those places are called grocery stores.

However, chicken is becoming problematical. I'm guessing it is because of the bird flu. The chicken around my place varies between W3,500 and W7,000 for a whole bird. Buying parts is also possible. Legs are more expensive than white meat because there is greater demand for it here.

Pork can be had at very good prices.

Beef is extremely expensive, but may come down if they agree to start importing US beef again. The deal was almost closed the other day, but then hit an obstacle. Stay tuned.

You might compare prices at the little meat shops in all the markets with prices at grocery stores.

Someone else will have to tell you about fish.

Point taken...but only if you wanna stank yourself up at a BBQ joint. As far as Korean LUNCH food goes, it is all veggies, rice, and gochujong. Sure, there's the odd strip of meat in the jiguea or a teaspoon of ground meat in the bibimbab, but IN GENERAL the lunch food is lame, especially for guys I assume, as ya'll need protein.

I think its just some metaphysical attachment to 'traditional' sure...they could make the lunch food better and add some meat...but then it wouldn't be the same crap they were eating during the war.

OP, Lunch food is OK...some can be great... if you don't wanna do tons of cooking and still eat K-food, how about just frying up some meat and puting it in a tupperware? Then order your K meal and just dump it in. Im sure itd taste good...

Do you have access to a Costco or Walmart? I've found that you can get chicken there in bulk for a pretty good deal. Beef is outrageously expensive anywhere you go!!! I have red meat 1 time per week more and I'd go broke Confused

took me a while to figure out the chicken delivery schedule at emart. the deal was 4 boneless breasts for 4000 won or something like that... It arrived on Mondays, usually. The supermarket part was in the basement and the meat dept. was all the way in the back, so it was a race to get in and out before those familiar strains of "Happy Happy E- Ma- Tuh" was piped directly into my brain. If I did happen to catch the song, I would take it out on my students the next day..."la la la la la la la laaaaaa....."
Smile

couldn't tell you about today vis a vis avian flu, etc. Made my escape in April!

How about donkkasseu? (breaded pork chop)
How about jye yuk deop bap? (orgasmically delicious spicy pork dish)
How about tuna kimbap? (it's protein anyway)
How about meat-on-a-stick?
How about fried chicken?
How about a bulgogi burger at Lotteria?

On that note: I was in BK the other day and, after i'd orderd, a korean guy ordered a Bulgogi Whopper... i checked and yes it's on the menu but not the picture menu. I've gotta try it!

Don't be so cruel. Suggesting Lotteria is like telling someone cyanide is good for your health.

Just so you do know, you don't need more than one meat meal a day, including men. In fact, most healthy would be about three or four times a week.

Death before Lotteria!

Seriously though, I go to Lotte Mart where I am. Get all the meat you want. No, you're not going to find cheaper steak. It's small. I might try it sometime. They don't have chicken *beep* there, but you can find them at other places. A whole chicken costs me between 4500 and 5000. Get them to cut it up for you. They cut it up small, but whatever. You can get Australian ground beef and put it in your freezer. It's more expensive that what you'd be used to, but it's not too bad. You can make three huge hamburgers for the cost of an imported beer plus you can use the burger in spaghetti. Mmmm. Pork is an endless deal. And it's good. Cut up beef, like the roast kind, is pretty expensive. Better to buy pork.

With chicken, white meat is cheaper than dark meat in Asia. They like fat.

I'm at a loss with bacon.

response in that order:

donkatsu - breaded = fried, pork = high fat/sodium/chol, low protein value.

jye yuk deop bap - good, but also pork. i've settled for the oh-jing-uh version. much healthier

tuna kimbap - good, i also aim for the chigae version. tuna + tofu = high protein.

meat on a stick - good, but no sidewalk carts around.

fried chicken - fried bad

Lotteria burger - are you kidding? haven't u ever seen supersize me? i refuse to eat fast food.
