HI,
Heading back to South Korea for my second year, this time teaching at a middle school.
Although I loved my freedom of wearing pretty much anything at my hagwon gig I am certain things are different in the puplic side of it.
Just curious as to what you male teachers are getting away with. |

You probably know this but --
dress like crap = no respect from students.
dress nice = kids pay attention and coteachers like you better.
My school didn't care if I dressed like a slacker but it's not a good idea. I've known of other schools that required semiformal wear. If it wasn't so freaking hot in the summers I'd wear a suit every day. |

OK, crap vs nice, no question. But a suit? Decidedly unnecessary.
Maybe dress up a bit at the outset (office casual is sufficient) to appear teacherly to your new colleagues but the kids dont much care or even notice. Respect in the classroom is earned from teaching ability & personal skills, not your threads.
Shorts & T's of course are out but no reason you cant wear a nice pair of jeans. I've never worn a tie to class but I'm certain it wouldnt make an ounce of difference. |

A sweater and blazer works fine. Short-sleeved, collered shirt with tie works well in summer.
I just got congratulated by my high school VP for doing a 'good job' today. What did I do? I sat through a music festival my students were putting on, stood up to introduce myself to some big-wigs there, complimented a big-wig on his English pronunciation, and that's it, apart from appearing enthusiastic, which I am. And I looked reasonably sharp, clean-cut and clean-shaven. The big-wigs were impressed with me and thus my VP was happy.
Bring a few cheap blazers and proper trousers and you'll be doing yourself a huge favour. If you're teaching girls it will probably also help you start off feeling more like a teacher and less like a rock star. |

I just look so damn good in my suits it's practically a crime not to wear 'em. |

First of all thanks for the reply, so casual clothes in good repair is formal enough then. Thats cool, I have been wearing a suit or tux everyday for the past 7 months so no tie is cool with me. I may stuff a blazer in my luggage and a couple ties.
I will be teaching the girls in middle school, tough nut to crack some of them as I remember but I'll enjoy the challenge.
Thanks a bundle |

I usually get away with just a G-String and nipple clamps but hey, that's just me. |

Wear a T-shirt, shorts and sandals in the middle of winter. Dress code. Give me a break. Dress codes are for crappy teachers. |

I doubt it. Long posting record of slagging public school teaching based on, what? -- a few months experience in a hagwon. Strong opinions, weak credibility. |

At first I dressed smart casual - pants and a shirt, no tie.
But I realized that many female teachers wore jeans - nice jeans of course. I've got a few nice pairs of jeans and I wore a pair as an experiment one day and have done ever since. Nice pair of jeans, t-shirt and blazer is common for me, or nice pair of jeans and a nice shirt.
Then again, if my middle school was any more relaxed it'd be horizontal. |

...based on too many students in one class. A few months? Try 3 years teaching in Asia. I know what I'm doing. Do you? |

OK if your a gal. If you're a guy, bear in mind that there are different standards for women. |
