A newbie observing this forum:

"The way they identify with those avatars. . .it's so in vogue, tongues and. . ."

"I wonder why they must identify so hard on a website. Is something wrong with their personal life?"

"Some are just so intelligent successful. They've really got it made here in Korea too, having babies and all. But why are they in Korea then? Would they have to tell us about their kids, just so we'd notice a difference in this society, another little round-eyed?"

"He's rich, struck it deep here. Been sapping the juice out of them Koreans. But who's he sucking from, and up to?"

"They're computer savvy. Let them bounce megabytes off their computer culture make-believe brains. They can't identify with the real world here in Korea."

Pride. Look into it.

There is money to be made without sapping. Strange POV you have...anyone who is successful is crooked or otherwise compromised. Again...it's called "work"...look into it.

This is just reaching, man. We all have time to be around a computer in any country...yourself included. New troll please.

FWIW, Korea is the most wired country in the world for broadband internet access. Internet cafes are ridiculously everywhere. Sometimes, 5 or 6 can be spotted within a moment's glance down a street. Korean internet culture has consumed young Koreans, and they spend a huge amount of time online, whether they are playing games, shopping, surfing the net, updating their Cyworld or Yahoo blogs, chatting with friends, hunting for sex partners or engaging in spirited discussion at Daum about social or political issues. This is all a direct bi-product due to the sheer amount of internet access that this country has.

For the foreign community, you need to factor into your analysis the 'abundant access' trend listed above, as well. But what makes us different than the Korean online usage, is that we are thousands of miles away from the west and our homes, some people missing it more than others. And we're living in the most ethnically homogeneous society on the planet and there are many teachers who do not have a lot of western contact outside of their co-workers and their extended friends.

All of the above creates a ripe and perfectly normal environment for an online community to spring up, and this is what we see here. And just like every other forum culture on the internet, yes, some people here get a little too into it. And living in a country where one can often feel isolated numerous times a day, contributes to that dependancy. On the other hand, there are many of us who just like to debate and interact, and balance the online one with the offline one. And many here hang out with each other offline, as well as banter online. These are common traits of global internet culture and not weaknesses or character flaws, unless you are looking at it from a 1985 perspective.

In effort to acquire a more informed analysis, you should lurk in other related forums around the net and assess patterns. Like the Thai forums at www.ajarn.com , or the Taiwan forums at www.forumosa.com , or the Japan forums at www.gaijinpot.com . This will give you some regional and industry perspective. Also, visit some massive discussion forums, like Tilted Forums or even Yahoo Chat, just so you have a deeper understanding of internet culture and habits, to better contrast with what you are seeing here.
